ᐅ KALLAX Doors Getting Stuck When Fully Loaded – Possible Causes?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with the doors on my IKEA KALLAX shelf unit that I installed for loading. The doors get stuck whenever the shelf is fully loaded. More specifically, when the compartments are filled up to the edge or even slightly beyond, the doors no longer open or close properly. I’m wondering what might be causing this. Could it be due to excessive weight, possibly warping of the edges, or is it a mechanical issue with the door hinges? Does anyone have suggestions on how to systematically analyze and best solve this problem? I look forward to expert advice!

Thanks for the responses so far! The topic of design versus load is interesting. The shelf is not overloaded, more like well-filled with books and binders, maybe about 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs) per shelf.

If you misuse the shelf as a heavy-duty shelf, the doors will of course jam

I can rule that out because, in my opinion, the load is within normal limits. I will check the hinges carefully tomorrow and adjust them properly.

If anyone has tips on how to reliably check for deformation in the carcass panels, please let me know!

Hello Guntis,

to check for deformation, you can use a straight object – for example, a spirit level, a ruler, or thin battens. Simply place the battens along the edges. If you notice a gap or space, that indicates a bending.

Sometimes it also helps to slightly empty the shelf and lay the boards on a flat surface. This gives a relatively good indication of whether anything has warped.

If you notice slight deformations, you might consider stabilizing the shelf with additional supports or braces. While IKEA does not offer extra reinforcements, you could, for example, attach small metal brackets or wooden strips.

Please update us on what you find!

Hello, if the air gap between the door and the shelving unit at the hinge is too small, the door may easily rub – I have experienced this as well. Often, loosening the screws on the hinges and pulling the door slightly backward, away from the shelving surface, then tightening them again can help.

It is important: Do not push or pull forcefully right away, but adjust carefully.

If the doors are too heavy for the shelving unit, sometimes simply replacing the hinges with stronger ones can solve the problem. They are available inexpensively online if you are interested.

Hey Guntis! Your topic really hits home – I had exactly the same problem with KALLAX doors when I stuffed them full. 😊

I simply adjusted the hinges a bit and rearranged the contents so that nothing presses directly against the door. Suddenly, everything worked perfectly again!

A little tip: Doors should always have a bit of clearance. If you tighten the doors too much, you'll often have trouble opening them later. Keep your chin up – you'll get it sorted easily!

Exactly! Fixing design issues by minimal adjustments sounds like a system that isn’t fully thought through, doesn’t it? KALLAX is basically Ikea-style, often built right at the edge of practicality.

Still, it’s important to remember: quality and functionality are two different things – and sometimes the user has to make improvements.

I also had problems with doors sticking on the KALLAX, but the solution turned out to be much simpler: just treated the hinges with some lubricant and readjusted them, plus rearranged the shelves a bit.

Sometimes it’s the little things that we tend to overcomplicate 😉. Thanks to everyone here for the helpful tips!
