ᐅ Kallax door no longer closes properly after DIY modification – what could be the cause?

Hello everyone,

I recently modified the doors on my Ikea Kallax shelving unit with a DIY project, where I removed them, repainted them, and then reinstalled them. However, since reinstalling, the door no longer closes properly – it seems to hang unevenly, often stays open, or doesn’t sit flush with the frame. The hinges are original, and I haven’t changed the mounting aside from slightly tightening the screws.

My question is: what could specifically cause the Kallax door not to close properly after such a DIY modification? Is it usually due to bent hinges, incorrect adjustment, or could it also be related to the fitting accuracy of the frame or the door itself?

Maybe some of you have had similar experiences or know common pitfalls to watch out for with this kind of modification. I’d appreciate any concrete tips on how to readjust or repair the door so it closes smoothly again. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone have reliable experience regarding whether the Kallax material changes when painted to the extent that the hinge tolerances are no longer sufficient?

Yes, painting MDF can cause slight warping. If this is too pronounced, the door may no longer fit perfectly in the frame, and the only solution is to readjust the hinges or add shims.

Also check the hinges themselves: Are they original or have you used replacements?

Original hinges are specifically designed for Kallax; replacements may differ in mechanics or spacing, which can affect how they close.

To assist more effectively, one important question: Did you only remove and reattach the hinges, or did you also drill new holes or alter them with wall plugs?

Sometimes the holes enlarge when screws are removed, especially if screws are frequently reinserted. This can cause the hinges to no longer hold firmly when tightened, making it impossible to position the door accurately.

It can help to secure the screws better by filling the holes with wood glue and small wood pieces or by using special wall plugs.

Also: How did you dry the door after painting? Was it exposed to strong temperature changes or high humidity?

These are small details that can make a difference, especially with thin furniture panels.
