Hello everyone, I have a small issue with my KALLAX shelving units from IKEA. I installed a door insert, but the door doesn’t close flush on one side; it slightly sticks out. It looks like the door isn’t sitting completely flat, which is not only visually unappealing but can also be problematic in practice, as it might rub or rattle somewhere.
My question is: Why might the KALLAX door insert be sticking out on one side even though all the screws are tightened and I followed the assembly instructions? Are there known causes, such as an uneven wall, warped door hinges, or perhaps manufacturing tolerances on IKEA’s part?
I have already tried adjusting the door a bit, but the changes are minimal and the issue remains. Does anyone have experience or tips on what to look out for or how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance!

A common reason for a KALLAX door panel not sitting flush on one side is actually a slight deformation of the door frame itself or minor inaccuracies in the wall or shelving unit. While KALLAX modules are sturdy, the material—especially doors made of MDF or hardboard—can warp slightly due to moisture or temperature changes.
Another important factor is the adjustment of the hinges. With IKEA doors, small misalignments can often be corrected by adjusting the hinge screws, with depth and lateral positioning being crucial.
This suggests that either the hinges are not perfectly aligned or the door itself may be warped. I recommend first checking the hinges with a Phillips screwdriver. Often there is an adjustment screw that allows you to better align the door at a right angle to the frame.
If that doesn’t help, check the back panel of the KALLAX shelving unit—is it mounted flush? A crooked back panel or a slight twist of the entire frame can also cause issues.

I would like to add to this topic because it concerns mechanical causes and adjustment options.
Primarily, it is essential to carefully inspect the hinges: KALLAX doors have adjustable flap hinges that can be fine-tuned in depth, width, and height. This three-dimensional adjustment allows for optimal door alignment. Especially, an incorrectly adjusted hinge depth can cause the door to stick out on one side.
Furthermore, checking the contact surfaces and the connection to the shelving structure is important. Even the smallest inaccuracies during assembly or manufacturing tolerances can affect the final result.
Additionally, moisture can play a role; MDF doors may warp slightly when exposed to too much moisture, which can lead to misalignment over time.
Finally, a tip: adjusting the hinge screws by just one millimeter can work wonders. If the door still doesn’t close flush permanently, contacting IKEA customer service is recommended, as replacement parts or a door exchange may be possible.

Hello Karinra,
I completely understand how frustrating a door that doesn’t close properly can be.
Regarding the causes: Often, a KALLAX door doesn’t hang correctly because it wasn’t precisely aligned during installation or because the shelving unit itself is slightly uneven. Try using a spirit level to check whether the piece of furniture is really level – even small deviations of a few millimeters can cause the door to sit unevenly.
I can confirm this. Especially adjusting the hinges often leads to a noticeable improvement. Usually, there are three different screws on the hinges:
- For lateral adjustment
- For height
- And for depth
Take your time to carefully adjust each one and test how the door closes in between.
If you assembled the shelving unit with slightly different thicknesses for the back panel or base, this can also cause misalignment. Depending on how flexible the hinges are, you can usually compensate for this.
I wish you good luck and hope you can get the door to close smoothly soon 🙂
