ᐅ Kallax door hinge not working after repainting the wall – what could be the reason?

Hello everyone,

I recently repainted my wall using a water-based latex paint, which has a slightly glossier finish compared to the previous matte paint. Since then, the door hanging system of my Kallax shelf door hasn’t been working properly – the door sticks and is very difficult to move. Before painting, everything operated smoothly.

My question is: what could cause the new wall paint to affect the door hanging mechanism? Could it be an issue with adhesion, or does the paint change the friction? Are there any known interactions between latex paint and the Kallax metal tracks? I look forward to your experiences and helpful advice!

Hello Anjeko,

Latex paint is quite durable but is best removed mechanically since solvents usually have little effect and might even cause the paint to become sticky. You can carefully use fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 320 grit) to sand off any paint residues. Afterwards, apply silicone spray or a special lubricant for furniture fittings – this reduces friction.

Important: Avoid oily lubricants like WD-40, as they attract dust and worsen sliding over time. When sanding the paint, make sure to do it evenly to avoid sharp edges.

If the paint is on the wall near the door stops and causes sticking, sometimes small shims placed behind the hinges can be a solution.

Better check if the door is perfectly aligned in the frame. Sometimes the position shifts after painting because the door sticks to the frame due to wet paint. You might need to take the door off and clean the tracks.

If the paint has not fully cured due to moisture, it may remain sticky. Patience with drying times is important. If necessary, deburr beforehand using sandpaper.

In addition to mechanical removal, I recommend checking the compatibility of the paint with the metal parts. Latex paints contain additives that can react with metal depending on their composition, potentially promoting corrosion or adhesion issues. If necessary, a special corrosion protection or protective coating on the metal before painting can help.

Thanks for the detailed instructions! I have now carefully sanded the metal tracks and then applied silicone spray. The door moves a bit more smoothly, but still not as smoothly as before the repaint.

That was new to me and sounds plausible. I will see if I can use a protective coating in case I need to repaint.

Are there any experiences regarding whether matte paints cause fewer issues than glossy latex paints with Kallax metal tracks?
