Hello everyone, I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and am now trying to fit the matching doors, but they simply won’t hang properly. The doors don’t seem to fit into the designated tracks and get stuck in several places, even though I assembled exactly the recommended door model. Are there any special tricks or tips for what might be causing this? Could there be production differences in the doors, or is the shelving unit incorrectly assembled? I have checked the drill holes and the measurements seem correct, yet it still doesn’t work. Thanks in advance for your help!

First, check whether the hinges are properly installed and the door is not warped. Often, the issue is caused by minor installation errors or uneven alignment of the components.

I am familiar with the issue of doors not fitting properly—especially with KALLAX systems, where the doors are mounted within frames that are precisely dimensioned. Here are a few technical details:

1. First, check all screws on the frame and the doors—if even one is loose or misaligned, it can cause tension.

2. Inspect the metal guides (rails) for any deformations. These are often very flat and can easily be bent.

3. Sometimes the alignment between the door and the shelving unit is not exact, which can create pressure points.

4. Material variations can also be a factor; some shelves or doors may differ slightly, which causes issues with tight tolerances.

Have you measured whether the shelving unit is truly square and level? A slight tilt can cause significant problems during installation.

This is a key point – but I would add: Why is the alignment off?

Are there technical specifications published by IKEA, or are there user experiences regarding these manufacturing tolerances? It would be helpful to specify the possible range of these deviations to more realistically assess whether an exchange or adjustment makes sense.

I would like to explain the whole topic a bit more fundamentally, as a systematic approach often helps, especially with KALLAX shelves:

The doors are usually attached to the side panels with clips or hinges. If the doors do not fit properly, the cause may be one of the following:

- Incorrect hinge position or wrong type of hinge: IKEA uses different door mechanisms, so check the assembly instructions very carefully.
- The rails have microscopic deformations or scratches that prevent proper installation.
- The shelf itself is not assembled at a perfect right angle. Placing it against the floor or wall and checking with a spirit level can help.
- Swollen wood due to moisture can also impair the fit.

If these points are ruled out, small adjustments to screws and hinges can help to hang the doors correctly.

Technically, the KALLAX door modules are designed to fit precisely, but manufacturing tolerances of ±1–2 mm (±0.04–0.08 inches) are common.

In case the doors do not fit, I recommend the following three steps:

1. Measure all relevant dimensions on the shelving unit (height, width, diagonals) to check for squareness.
2. Check the instructions to ensure the hinges are installed correctly – the door tilt angles must be compatible with the damping pads and hinges.
3. Perform a test by placing the doors lightly into the guide without attaching the hinges to determine the fitting width.

A deviation in the squareness is often the reason the doors cannot be adjusted. Warped or twisted carcass parts due to incorrect assembly or uneven flooring are not uncommon.
