Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA after cleaning the windows. I cleaned the glass surfaces as well as the areas around the shelf using a common household window cleaner. I noticed that the sealing on some of the white KALLAX elements has been visibly damaged: it looks like small matte spots have appeared that cannot be wiped off. I suspect the cleaner has affected the surface.

My question to you: Has anyone had similar experiences? Is there a way to repair or restore the damaged sealing? Perhaps some kind of resealing or maintenance treatment that can remove or improve the matte or worn appearance?

I would really appreciate a detailed response, as I do not want to simply replace the shelf. Thanks in advance!

That’s really frustrating; these things happen faster than you might expect. I once had something similar with a white Billy shelf. Window cleaners often contain alcohol or ammonia, which can attack the coatings.

Fortunately, there are a few options: you can try gently treating the surface with a fine polish designed for plastic or furniture surfaces. In my experience, this partially reduced the hazy effect. There are also special furniture care oils or polishes for laminate surfaces that usually help restore the shine.

However, if the coating is severely damaged, a full repair is difficult. At least you can salvage the appearance somewhat. I hope this helps! 🙂

Hello genuken,

I would like to provide a more structured response here, as I often see questions about surface care for furniture.

1. Cause: As Alberto51 already mentioned, window cleaners contain ingredients like alcohol or ammonia that can damage the protective layer on coated surfaces. Especially with KALLAX, the surface is often melamine-coated, which is quite durable but not invincible.

2. First steps to remedy:
- Try wiping the surface with a mild cleaner suitable for laminate or plastic. For example, furniture polish or wax paste can be applied thinly and then gently buffed.
- Very important: Do not use too much pressure or be too rough, as this can further damage the surface.

3. If that does not help:
- Re-sealing with a special furniture lacquer or clear varnish from a hardware store can be useful, but the application is not straightforward and requires careful preparation.

4. General tips:
- Avoid using window cleaner on furniture surfaces in the future; instead, use specially recommended furniture cleaners.
- Always test products on an inconspicuous spot before applying them broadly.

Summary: Fully restoring the damaged seal will be difficult, but furniture polish or wax pastes can significantly improve the appearance. For stubborn areas, applying a clear varnish might help—make sure to follow the instructions carefully.

I hope this helps you decide how to proceed.

Window cleaners are often too harsh for melamine-coated surfaces like KALLAX.

Try using furniture polish or car wax; these often help restore the shine.

For resealing, furniture varnish is available at hardware stores, but proper surface preparation is essential.

Hello genuken,

I would like to briefly explain again why window cleaning products can cause problems with KALLAX and how to handle it best.

KALLAX usually has a melamine resin coating – this makes the material resistant to scratches and moisture, but chemicals like ammonia or alcohol break down the protective layer. That’s why you get those dull spots.

Here’s what you can do now:

- Try cleaning with a very gentle furniture polish or a care product designed for plastic and resin surfaces. These products form a protective film on the surface.
- Use a soft cloth, preferably microfiber, and apply the polish thinly.
- Don’t rub harshly, but gently polish.

If this does not give the desired result, there is a somewhat more involved solution:

- Carefully sand the affected areas with a fine sanding sponge, then apply a thin layer of clear furniture or acrylic lacquer finish. This requires patience and careful work but is doable.

Please always pay attention to which cleaners you use and how you use them. Window cleaners are made for glass and mirrors, not furniture!

This is not a big problem but a good learning experience :-)

Wishing you success with this!

Oh no, the classic window cleaner trap! 🙂

I had something similar once, and something like car wax helped me. Sounds crazy, but it’s a great method: just apply a small amount to a clean cloth and spread it evenly, then buff it.

This restores the shine and often looks better than before.

And for the future: it’s best to use window cleaner only on glass, not on wood or laminate.

Good luck saving your IKEA treasure! 😉
