ᐅ KALLAX cubes are not square – manufacturing defect?

Hello everyone, I recently ordered several KALLAX shelves from IKEA, and when unpacking, I noticed that some of the cubes do not seem to have the typical square dimensions. Specifically, the front measurements differ by a few millimeters in height and width, so the compartments are not perfectly square.

My question is whether this is actually a manufacturing defect or if the parts are designed this way, for example due to tolerances or material warping. Has anyone had similar experiences? I would appreciate any technical insights or feedback on whether this issue is known and how IKEA handles it.

According to the official IKEA specifications, the dimensions of KALLAX cubes are 33x33 cm (13x13 inches) on the inside. Deviations of a few millimeters may occur due to manufacturing tolerances but are generally not critical for functionality. Significant misalignment or noticeably distorted dimensions should not happen and would actually be considered defects. Minor deviations could also be caused by assembly and installation, for example, if screws are not tightened precisely or if the back panel is not properly aligned.

In general, production tolerances for wood and wood-based modules like KALLAX are not unusual and typically allowed within a range of ±2 mm (±0.08 inches). The compartments are designed so that minor deviations still appear square. If the difference exceeds this range, it is considered a quality defect. In such cases, IKEA usually offers replacement or return options. It would be helpful to record the exact measurements with a caliper to better assess the extent of the deviation.

Thank you, that makes sense. In my case, the deviations are close to +/- 5 mm (± 0.2 inches) at the ends, which I find quite significant. The squareness is visibly affected, especially on the side walls, which sometimes appear angled. I followed the assembly instructions quite precisely using a torque wrench, which might be somewhat unusual.

It’s possible that the packaging material was not properly secured, causing deformations during transport. The product was delivered factory sealed.

That does indeed sound a bit more than the usual manufacturing tolerances.

IKEA KALLAX is made from particleboard with a melamine coating, which can slightly swell or warp when exposed to moisture. However, 5mm (0.2 inches) is really at the upper limit. If the front dimensions do not fit properly, I would recommend contacting IKEA to request a replacement.

It can also be worthwhile to check the flatness of the parts before assembly—this helps prevent any misalignment from occurring during construction.

That’s frustrating when the cubes aren’t perfectly square! 🙂

I once had a KALLAX that appeared slightly off, but that was mostly due to an uneven floor. Maybe check the leveling and the surface underneath? Sometimes it also helps to carefully inspect all panels for corners and edges. If one piece is genuinely warped, making a complaint is definitely the right course of action!
