Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a KALLAX shelf from IKEA and noticed that one individual cube in the shelf is slightly tilted. I suspect that the shelf has warped due to too much weight on certain levels or cubes. More specifically, I placed several books and some heavier items there. I’m wondering if this issue is typical for KALLAX shelves under heavy load or if I might have missed a mounting error.

Another point: The shelf is standing on a fairly even laminate floor, but I’m curious if slight unevenness or uneven weight distribution can cause such tilting.

Do you have any tips on how to best stabilize the shelf against tilting or what to consider fundamentally to distribute the weight evenly?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and experiences!

If a KALLAX cube stands unevenly, it is usually due to an uneven floor or uneven load distribution. Make sure all screws are tight and use furniture pads to level it. Distribute the weight more evenly.

Hello Ellake,

I can well understand your observation, and unfortunately, this issue is quite common with KALLAX, especially when a lot of weight is concentrated in one spot. KALLAX shelves are fairly sturdy, but the individual cubes are not designed to permanently support point loads with heavy weight.

Basically, you should check whether all fasteners are installed correctly. IKEA uses simple dowels and connector screws for KALLAX, which can gradually loosen over time when subjected to heavy weight.

A common mistake is also that the back panel is either not properly fitted or missing – it significantly stabilizes the unit against distortion. If the back panel is missing, the shelf can quickly appear crooked.

Yes, almost any unevenness in the floor can become more pronounced when the shelf is heavily loaded. I recommend leveling the shelf with small wedges under individual feet. You can also place soft felt pads under heavy items inside the shelf to distribute stress more evenly.

One possible solution, if it suits the look: reinforce or replace the back panel with a sturdy plywood board to achieve significantly better stability.

Does this help for now, or would you like to go into more detail about the type of load?

Hey Ellake,

great that you brought up this topic here! 🙂 I once had a KALLAX too, which gave way a bit because of too much weight. But don’t worry, it’s really not a big deal!

Back then, I just redistributed the weight a little and made sure to store heavy items lower down. A little tip from me: you can screw small plastic feet under the shelving unit—they are adjustable and make the whole thing much more stable!

You’ll manage, I’m sure you can get the shelf straightened again! 🙂

Hello Ellake,

Very interesting topic! Your point about the possible overloading of individual cubes due to books and heavy items is indeed crucial. I would like to go into a bit more technical detail here:

KALLAX shelves are mostly made from particleboard with a melamine coating and, as mentioned, are connected using simple dowels and screws. This construction has limitations in terms of load-bearing capacity, especially regarding point loads.

There are many possible reasons for a tilted position, but the most critical are:

1. Uneven load distribution: If a single cube is loaded much heavier than the others, the frame can easily become distorted.

2. Missing or improperly fitted back panel: The back panel is important for lateral stability.

3. Assembly errors such as screws not fully tightened or loose connections.

4. Uneven floors, which can be evened out by using small shims.

My advice: First measure the full extension of the shelf and check all connections for a firm fit. Then use a spirit level to verify if the surface of the shelf is even. If there is any tilt, redistribute the weight better and, if necessary, adjust the shelf using appropriate furniture wedges.

If you want, you can also describe exactly how you load the shelf, so more specific advice can be given.
