ᐅ KALLAX Converted into a Bench – Issues with Stability?

Good morning everyone, I am planning to convert an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit into a bench to use in my entryway. However, I have noticed that its stability seems questionable without additional reinforcements, as the unit was not originally designed to support weight as a seating surface. My specific question is: Has anyone here had experience converting a KALLAX shelf into a bench and can share whether it is stable enough without extra reinforcement? If so, what measures did you take to prevent issues like sagging shelves or wobbly side panels? Are there particular fastening techniques, reinforcement elements, or materials you would especially recommend? I appreciate any advice, especially since I want to use the bench regularly and want to avoid any risk of instability or collapse.

Are there any specific practical experiences or test results proving that simple brackets or battens are sufficient?

In my opinion, simple brackets are not enough, as they only provide point support. To achieve lasting stability, it is necessary to reinforce the sidewalls and the floor over a large area using appropriate materials. Plywood or multiplex panels offer significantly greater rigidity in this regard. Without such measures, the thin particle boards experience high stress, which will eventually lead to failure.

The interior side walls reinforced with 12mm (1/2 inch) multiplex panels, screwed and glued.

That sounds like an extensive modification. I’m curious how this affects the appearance. Do you have to accept changes to the exterior as well? And most importantly: Does it remain modular and transportable like the original?

Secondly, are there options using metal profiles that might require less material thickness and effort but offer greater stability? I ask because I prefer a modification without extensive woodworking.

The renovation with internal reinforcements can be almost invisible from the outside if the plywood panels are installed flush and screwed on the inside, without altering the exterior surfaces. Usually, only the seating surface is replaced with an additional panel, which is often integrated as a design feature (e.g., wood of a different color or painted accordingly).

Regarding metal profiles: These are sturdy, but sometimes require precision work and are harder to integrate invisibly. The weight also changes. Nevertheless, metal brackets or flat steel provide good additional stability, especially for crossbrace support.
