Hello everyone, I am planning to combine my existing IKEA KALLAX shelving unit with elements from the SVALNÄS series. Specifically, I am wondering if the KALLAX, which consists of sturdy cubes, fits both visually and functionally with SVALNÄS, which has a more delicate, frame-based design using wood and metal braces.

I mainly want to know if there are any practical reasons against combining them – for example regarding stability, mounting, or storage efficiency. And of course, I am also interested in how it looks to you: Do the pieces work well together visually, or do they appear mismatched?

I look forward to your experiences, opinions, and tips!

Hello rebu30,

Your question about combining KALLAX and SVALNÄS is very interesting and also quite complex, as the two series follow different design philosophies and material approaches.

KALLAX is a very sturdy, cubic shelving system, usually made of particleboard with a melamine finish, characterized by its clear geometry and stability. In contrast, SVALNÄS uses a frame concept with wooden profiles and metal braces to create a lighter, airier appearance.

Functionally, the systems can be combined if, for example, you use KALLAX as storage cubes and place or position SVALNÄS shelves on top or next to them. However, you need to pay attention to the different MDF/stability ratings. KALLAX cubes can carry a good amount of weight, while SVALNÄS shelves are less load-bearing due to the wooden frames and mounting brackets being less robust.

Another challenge is the attachment. KALLAX elements do not come with pre-made fittings for screws from the outside, whereas SVALNÄS is assembled using screw connections. If you want to connect both firmly, you will need stronger screws or additional fittings. On the other hand, you could also use clamp adapters or feet to avoid damage.

Regarding the visual impression: this strongly depends on your choice of colors and arrangement. SVALNÄS is available with light wood frames, which can work well with white or black KALLAX units. If you value a harmonious overall look, I recommend using SVALNÄS sparingly as an accent or extension on KALLAX, and coordinating colors and materials accordingly.

I would be interested to know: What exactly do you have planned, which colors and modules do you want to combine? How should the final result look in your space?

Hey rebu30,

I can only say: Definitely go for it! 🙂 I tried it myself and really love the combination! KALLAX provides the sturdy base unit, and SVALNÄS adds that nice open, lightweight look on top or next to it. It looks very elegant and makes the room feel very cozy.

Of course, as Domau0 already mentioned, you have to pay attention to stability, but with a few small metal angle brackets and screws, it holds up perfectly. And regarding the appearance: If you choose natural wood colors for the SVALNÄS parts, it matches really well with the simple, plain KALLAX shelves.

At first, I was worried it might bring together things that don’t fit – but the opposite is true! So don’t be put off and give it a try!

Fits well. The combination works if you securely fasten SVALNÄS using the screw connections. Visually, light wood from SVALNÄS pairs best with white KALLAX units.

This is an important point. For a stable construction, you should especially ensure that the loads are clearly distributed. KALLAX is solid and can support a lot of weight, while SVALNÄS uses profiled edges and metal braces that are not necessarily designed for heavy loads.

That can work, but I recommend precise assembly so that the connection does not create stress points that could damage the material.

The visual appearance strongly depends on color choice and arrangement. White KALLAX combined with natural-colored SVALNÄS works well. Those who prefer darker furniture should reconsider this combination, as the designs can visually conflict.

Furthermore, I suggest documenting your space with measurements and checking the load requirements before connecting the elements.

Thanks for the tip! I’m planning to use a white KALLAX (four cubes) combined with the natural birch wood frames from SVALNÄS. The SVALNÄS elements are intended as overlays or side frames to showcase items like plants and decorations.

Also, I don’t want to place heavy loads on the SVALNÄS shelves, just lighter objects.

Regarding the connection, I don’t see any issue with using metal brackets, right? Should I use specific screws to avoid damaging the furniture?

One more question: Are there any issues with depth when combining them? KALLAX has a depth of about 39 cm (15 inches), while SVALNÄS shelves are slightly narrower—would that look awkward?
