Hello everyone,

I’ve noticed that when buying additional parts for my KALLAX shelf, there are significant color differences. The newly purchased elements look quite different compared to the older ones, both in color depth and even in gloss level.

I’m mainly interested to know if others here in the forum have observed the same? Maybe it’s due to production updates or batch variations?

I bought the shelf about a year ago and now wanted to expand it — the color discrepancies are quite obvious to me on close inspection.

How do you handle cases like this? Are there any tricks to visually harmonize the appearance? Looking forward to your experiences and opinions!

Even if the color code is identical, there can be slight differences in the composition of the coatings.

Exactly! To add to that: color production is often adjusted industrially depending on raw material suppliers or changes in the coating manufacturer's formulas.

The drying process also plays a role: different humidity and temperature conditions during manufacturing can affect the final shade. For example, a KALLAX shelf from March production may look slightly different than one made in October.

For those interested in the technical side: the coating is usually based on melamine resin layers, which form a very thin film. Deviations of just a few micrometers can already be noticeable.

My recommendation for an exact match: there are specialized color analyses available, and the surfaces can be custom-matched. However, this is a complex process and mostly used by professionals.

Are you sure your KALLAX items are from the same series? Sometimes color tones are adjusted between series (e.g., KALLAX with doors vs. open shelving) and are not identical.
