Hello everyone,

Yesterday, my IKEA KALLAX shelf unfortunately fell over and one of the middle dividers broke. The shelf is about 1.5 years old, has not been subjected to unusual stress, and usually stands in a fixed spot. The break is clearly visible and affects the middle compartment, but overall the shelf is still stable.

I am now considering whether this type of damage to the KALLAX shelf can be repaired at all or if it would be better to replace it completely. Does anyone have experience with damaged KALLAX shelves, especially with breaks after a fall? Which materials and tools are best suited for a repair, and how stable will the shelf be afterward?

I would be very grateful for any advice and assessments!

That doesn't sound too bad – KALLAX is not made of solid wood but rather particleboard with a laminate finish. If the break is on a divider like that, it can often be fixed quite well with wood glue and clamps.

If you want it to remain sturdy, adding small angle brackets screwed on the inside can be a big help. Simple and effective, and you’ll usually have your shelving unit back in good shape soon. 😉

Just be careful not to use screws that are too long, or the material might split.

Regarding repairs: KALLAX is usually made of coated wood-based material, which, if a partition breaks, no longer withstands as much load as before.

For a repair, I recommend:
- Clamping wood glue for at least 30 minutes (e.g., with clamps)
- Installing metal corner braces inside for added stability
- Alternatively, gluing a thin plywood panel to the back as reinforcement

The load-bearing capacity will never be quite like new, but this is generally sufficient for regular use.

Wood glue plus clamps are usually sufficient. Adding angle brackets helps support the weight, then it will hold. Otherwise, replacement is necessary.

I completely understand how frustrating a break like that is. I once had a shelf break similarly, and I was really unsure whether to repair it or just buy a new one.

If the shelf means a lot to you or the damage isn’t too severe, I would definitely try to repair it—taking it step by step, as already described here. It’s also worth considering the tip to add internal reinforcement.

However, don’t expect too much; if you put a lot of weight on the shelf, its stability might still be compromised.

Apply wood glue, press firmly together, and clamp for at least 30-45 minutes. Then insert metal brackets; this provides stability. Otherwise, replace the part.
