I am considering using my IKEA KALLAX as a TV stand for my new large television but have some concerns about its stability. My TV is 65 inches and weighs around 18 kg (40 lbs) – is the KALLAX unit stable enough for this, especially if it’s used only as a base? I’m particularly interested in how the construction holds up in everyday use with such a heavy device. Has anyone had experience using the KALLAX as a TV stand for large TVs, or does it quickly become problematic due to insufficient stability? Are there any tips on making the unit safer without major modifications?

One should critically question the claim that KALLAX is stable enough for a 65-inch TV.That's true. I might add a wooden board or MDF to better distribute the load. Does anyone have specific recommendations on how to reinforce it without making it look too bulky? Also, any suggestions on the appropriate material thickness?
That's brilliant with the reinforcement! 🙂 I did the same and I'm really happy with it. Just put the board on, screw it from underneath, and the surface becomes rock solid! Don’t let yourself be discouraged; the KALLAX can really hold up much better with a little help :-)

What helped me was placing a wooden board on top and securing the whole setup to the wall. This not only provides stability but also safety in case someone bumps into it. I know it can sometimes feel uncertain whether it will hold, but with a few simple adjustments, you can improve it significantly.

Does anyone have specific recommendations on how to reinforce this without it looking too bulky? My tip: Choose a plywood panel about 15–18 mm (0.6–0.7 inches) thick, cut precisely to the dimensions of the KALLAX. You can cover the panel with veneer or laminate matching the furniture surface, so it doesn’t appear too heavy. It is also important to secure the panel inside the shelf unit with flat brackets, which help to distribute the load evenly without adding visual bulk.
A good solution is often to pick the panel color to match the KALLAX, making it barely noticeable.

A great solution is often to choose the panel in the same color as the KALLAX, so it’s hardly noticeable.Exactly, that’s what I did too! It looks super clean and holds really well. This way, you can safely place your TV without worrying about unstable KALLAX shelves. Good luck!
