ᐅ Using KALLAX as a room divider damages the floor – any protection?

logan70Hello everyone,
I am planning to use my IKEA KALLAX shelf as a room divider in my apartment. However, I noticed that due to the weight and direct contact with the floor, there are already slight marks and damage visible—especially on my laminate flooring. My specific question is: How can I use the KALLAX shelf as a room divider without damaging the floor underneath? Are there proven methods or materials (such as special protective mats, felt pads, or similar) that can prevent this?
I would appreciate practical tips and experiences, especially if you know solutions that work long-term and can handle heavy loads. Thanks in advance!

Hey Logan70, I totally understand that problem! 🙂
What worked really well for me were felt pads under the shelf legs. Just use thicker pads that distribute the pressure well. You can also place a thin plastic sheet or a lightweight wooden board underneath – that really helps spread the weight much better.
The KALLAX shelf is quite heavy, so definitely not just felt pads, but a combination with a firm, smooth base! This way you can avoid a lot of trouble with the floor.
It’s actually great because you get a stable shelf and keep the floor in perfect condition! 🙂 Good luck!

I would like to offer a critical perspective here.
It is widely known that furniture causing point loads on sensitive floors can lead to damage—even with felt pads, the pressure distribution is often not ideal. Simply adding padding does not necessarily prevent long-term damage.
I would suggest checking before installing the shelving unit whether a suitable underlay made of hard rubber, cork, or even a PVC protective mat designed for laminate flooring would be appropriate. These provide better pressure distribution than simple felt pads and are also non-slip.
Another option could be light support with metal feet, which ensure better load transfer, especially if the KALLAX is repurposed and will be loaded more heavily.
Without a professionally planned underlay, floor damage can continue despite basic protective measures. Therefore, assess the load and choose the appropriate underlay, not just what looks good.

Felt pads are convenient but usually only a short-term solution. The sliding layer wears down quickly due to weight and movement, especially with KALLAX shelves when used as room dividers and occasionally moved or loaded.
Much better are specialized furniture glides or sliding surfaces made of cork combined with a thin plastic protector. This way, the floor surface is optimally protected while the furniture remains stable and is less likely to slip.
I also recommend applying a thin protective film on the floor (e.g., clear floor protection mats), which offers additional scratch protection without affecting the appearance.
This combination of underlay, protective mat, and felt/rubber provides the best balance between protection and functionality.

Hey Logan70, you’re bringing up a really important topic!
That sounds like a great start, but I’d also suggest getting a bit creative.
Sometimes cork furniture coasters with self-adhesive rubber pads underneath help – they provide grip and reduce pressure. It’s almost like a small rug protecting the floor gently 😉
It’s also important to occasionally move the shelf and refresh the protection under the pads or mats. That way everything stays in great condition.
Have fun redecorating!
