ᐅ KALLAX and Low Ceiling – Is That Enough for Horizontal Assembly?

LobimarHello everyone,
I have a specific question regarding the assembly of the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit in relation to low ceiling heights. My room ceiling is only about 2.10 meters (6 feet 11 inches) high, which partly limits standing up the unit during assembly. Therefore, I am considering whether it is practical to assemble the KALLAX lying flat on the floor and then stand it up afterwards.
Has anyone had experience with this and can judge if assembling it while lying down is sufficient? What’s most important to me is whether stability or assembly quality might be affected by building it lying flat, and if there are any mechanical or structural disadvantages to this approach.
Thanks in advance for any insights or advice!

My ceiling height is only about 2.10 meters (6 ft 11 in), which partly limits assembling the shelf while standing. The KALLAX shelf is typically assembled completely lying down. The instructions recommend building it on a large, flat surface, so a low ceiling height is generally not an issue.
Assembling it lying down actually has advantages: the connections between the side panels and shelves are easier to screw and glue because the furniture stays stable and doesn’t move. The stability of the shelf after assembly is not affected, as long as all screws are properly tightened.
For safety, be careful when moving the finished shelf, especially when it is fully loaded. No modifications to the structure are necessary. If space is very tight during positioning later, it is advisable to have a second person to help.

whether it is practical to assemble the KALLAX lying flat on the floor and then stand it upI would like to elaborate on this, as the method of assembling it flat is often underestimated. I assume you are putting the shelf together using the typical screws and wooden dowels. When working lying flat, the biggest challenge, especially with multiple components, is positioning and aligning everything before screwing it together.
I recommend laying out all parts on a clean, level surface first and securing them if possible with aids such as clamps or even slightly adhesive painter’s tape to prevent the panels from shifting. This greatly improves the fit accuracy.
Another point is that the KALLAX shelf is relatively sturdy in design and has no moving parts. Assembling it while lying flat avoids tipping over during construction, which is an advantage. However, you should be careful when standing it upright since your low ceiling height of 2.10 m (6 ft 11 in) means you might need to rotate or tilt the shelf. Be sure to precisely measure the space in front of the installation site.
Finally, a question: Have you already checked whether the KALLAX doors or drawers operate smoothly given the low height? Sometimes a little extra clearance is needed for opening them properly.

Summary: Assembly lying flat – no problem. Standing it up requires sufficient room. Otherwise, all good.
