Hello everyone,

I have an issue with the IKEA KALLAX shelf that’s really frustrating me. Every time I assemble it, the door or drawer doesn’t close flush but always crooked, and this doesn’t seem to be an isolated case – I’ve taken the unit apart and rebuilt it completely three times now, always with the same result. The joints all look right visually, but the shelf never appears straight or properly aligned, and this is especially noticeable with the doors.

I’ve already tried minor adjustments, tightening the screws, and checking if the back panel is correctly in place, but the problem persists.

My question is: Is there a known cause I might be missing? Has anyone else frequently had trouble with a KALLAX that closes crooked despite assembling it correctly? I don’t want to keep relying on luck or have to take the shelf apart again without understanding what’s really going on. Thanks for your advice!

You’ve already done a great job with that. With KALLAX, it can sometimes be a bit tricky. Often, the issue is caused by an unevenly tensioned back panel or slightly warped side panels, which get stressed when screwed together. My tip: try attaching the back panel completely straight and tight first, making sure it is square at a right angle. Distorted edges can sometimes develop if the back panel cannot be positioned cleanly.

It can also help to avoid fully tightening the screws on the door or drawer fittings right away. Instead, tighten them gradually after a trial run—this allows for better alignment.

If the doors or drawer fronts themselves are slightly warped (which can happen with mass production), unfortunately, there’s little you can do to fix that. In that case, a replacement might be necessary.

I hope this gives you some helpful ideas.

Misalignment is indeed a common issue with KALLAX, which is largely related to the structural properties and the materials used. However, in your case, the problem seems to be more fundamental. Here is a more detailed explanation of the assembly process with a focus on the angles:

1. Preparation:
- Lay out all the parts side by side beforehand and check if the board edges are smooth.
- Especially for the back panel: verify whether it is exactly square. IKEA products are usually precise, but small tolerances can occasionally occur.

2. Assembling the side panels:
- Pay particular attention to achieving a right angle here, and use a carpenter’s square or metal ruler to check the shelf.
- Screwing too tightly can sometimes compress the wood slightly, causing the shelf to warp.

3. Installing the back panel:
- The back panel provides stability and must fit tightly—neither loose nor so tight that it causes the side panels to bend.

4. Doors and drawers:
- The hinges typically have multiple adjustment screws: horizontal, vertical, and depth. Use these to achieve perfect alignment.

Did you specifically check whether the side panels are parallel during assembly? Did you place the entire KALLAX unit on a perfectly level surface at the end to see if it wobbles?

I ask because even a slight unevenness of the floor can make it difficult to assess alignment accurately.

Could you indicate if the doors or drawers are misaligned on a specific side? This often provides a clue whether the issue is due to the attachment or a warped board.

I know that problem. Check if the wall plugs are properly inserted and not tilted.

Even slightly misaligned plugs or screws can affect the closing of the doors.

Also, inspect the door hinges to ensure they are correctly installed and all screws are tightened securely, but not overly tight.

This balance is truly critical. I wonder, though, whether IKEA’s manufacturing tolerances are set tightly enough to keep these issues rare.

If a KALLAX shelf is assembled multiple times and still ends up crooked, the question for me is: Is this mainly due to material inconsistencies, or more a result of the assembly instructions and standardization of the components?

I want to understand exactly what’s behind this

I would recommend paying very close attention to every step in the next assembly and documenting exactly where any distortion occurs. It might also help if a second person reads through the assembly instructions alongside and, if needed, suggests alternative assembly steps.

Are there any experiences here regarding how often the IKEA KALLAX series is really inconsistent in terms of quality?

I find it really frustrating that furniture, which you would expect to fit standard dimensions and simple assembly systems, can cause such problems.

I know that feeling all too well and have often doubted whether I should have just left the package unopened. But it is definitely possible to get the problem under control – as already mentioned, the back panel, hinges, and adjustments.

If it happens too often, I’ve also noticed that slight depressions or unevenness at the installation site can make a difference and cause the unit to warp. Using a small level and adjusting under the feet helped me stabilize my repeatedly "crooked" KALLAX.

My recommendation: Find a clearly level spot, take your time with the alignment, and be sure to readjust the door adjustment screws for depth and height several times. That usually works! 🙂
