Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific question regarding Ikea Brimnes furniture: Is there anyone here who has repeatedly modified or repurposed furniture from the Brimnes series by Ikea? I’m particularly interested in experiences about how flexible this furniture really is when assembled not just once, but reconfigured or adjusted multiple times.

I have personally rearranged and adapted the combination of dresser and wardrobe several times, but sometimes the stability no longer feels as secure. Therefore, I’m wondering if there are any tips or experiences about how often these pieces can be reassembled without losing stability or damaging the material.

Also, I would like to know which tools or tricks have proven useful to make modifications easier—such as with the screws or the back panel.

I’m looking forward to your assessments and practical advice!

Hey Najabla,

great question! Brimnes is really a versatile series, even though some say all the screws are sealed with a bit of mystery 😄. I’ve assembled and reassembled my dressers and cabinets from this line at least five times – and yes, they hold up surprisingly well! Of course, after the third or fourth adjustment, you do notice the wood loosening a bit in some areas, but it remains stable.

I’d say as long as you don’t overtighten or repeatedly screw and unscrew too aggressively, everything keeps its strength.

My tip: Always use a cordless drill with low torque settings to avoid damaging anything. The back panels are easy to replace if a nail or screw becomes stripped – just buy a new one, and everything stays nice and tight.

Looking forward to hearing if others have had similar experiences!

Hello Najabla and everyone,

I have actually modified Brimnes furniture several times, although not as often as praWarre69. Regarding stability, I can confirm that the wooden dowels and screws do suffer slightly with each disassembly, but they do not immediately lose their functionality. It is important to handle the parts gently during modification and not to overtighten the screws when removing or reassembling.

I strongly recommend a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque to avoid accidentally overtightening the screws. If a back panel is damaged, you can usually order replacements individually.

It also helps to apply a small drop of oil to the screws before removal, which makes retightening easier later. In my experience, the furniture typically withstands 3–4 modifications without significant loss of quality; for more frequent changes, I would recommend having suitable spare parts on hand.

If you want, I can also provide tips on specific types of connections from the assembly instructions that work especially well for modifications.

Wow, thanks for the great explanations so far! It’s really encouraging to get a bit creative with Brimnes. 😊

I’ve only modified one wardrobe from the series myself, and it was fascinating to see how flexible the system actually is.

That sounds like a good rule of thumb! I’m currently trying to improvise a combination of a wardrobe and chest of drawers for a small apartment and was a bit intimidated by the idea of taking everything apart multiple times. But with the right tools and a careful hand, these pieces really seem to have a lot to offer.

If anyone has special tips on how to best loosen the Y-shaped screws or how to secure the back panels optimally, please share! I want to do this properly and get the most out of the flexibility and stability over time.

Looking forward to more tips and experiences!
