TupojoHello everyone,
I have a question that might have been relevant to some of you in the community before: Is there an easy way to remove the drawers from the IKEA Brimnes drawer unit?
Specifically, I’m interested in whether it is possible to pull the drawers completely out of the cabinet without damaging or breaking the rails or other parts. Maybe someone knows the trick to removing the drawers smoothly and without much effort.
I have already done some searching, but the instructions I’ve found often seem very complicated or require disassembling the entire piece of furniture, which I would like to avoid.
I would really appreciate any tips on how to safely and quickly remove these drawers, perhaps even advice on what to definitely avoid. Thanks in advance!

it’s great that you wrote your question so detailed – that really helps everyone!
Regarding your IKEA Brimnes drawers: yes, there is actually a simple trick!
Usually, the drawers are attached to the rail with a plastic clip – just gently push this clip upwards in the middle while carefully pulling the drawer out at the same time. You don’t need to use much strength, more of a gentle push.
But be careful: if you use too much force or lift sideways, the small plastic part can break easily, and then the drawer will get stuck.
So my advice: take it easy and don’t pull hard. You’ll see it works smoothly. Good luck and let me know if you run into any problems!

Hello Tupojo,
I’m happy to add some information since questions about the Brimnes drawer come up quite often.
Basically, there are two locking mechanisms: the so-called bottom bracket mounting of the drawer slides and a small clip system.
The following steps can help:
- Pull the drawer out completely until it stops.
- On each side, gently press or pry the plastic locking tabs upward, while paying attention to the drawer slides.
- Slowly remove the drawer.
It is important not to bend the drawer slides or use force. If the locking tabs don’t release easily, you can carefully use a small screwdriver to pry them.
If this helps, feel free to give feedback.

Most drawers are fixed to the rail with a plastic catch – simply press lightly upwards in the middle of this catch while gently pulling the drawer out.I am a bit cautious about this approach, as levering at this catch can sometimes be problematic, especially with older models where the plastic may have become brittle.
Therefore, it would be important to know if there are any differences in the sliding rails in the current 2021 generation of Brimnes.
My experience shows that careful handling is advisable, but depending on the condition of the furniture, it’s generally safer to be cautious. Does anyone have recent experience with the currently delivered Brimnes drawers and their sliding mechanism?
Also, I find the statement that you “simply” have to press upwards a little too simplified – because usually it doesn’t work unless the drawer is fully pulled out to the stop.

Does anyone here have recent experience with the currently delivered Brimnes drawers and their sliding mechanism?I can relate well to that; I was also worried about damaging something. In the end, my experience was quite similar to what was described, but I took my time and carefully pulled the drawer forward until it stopped. Then, very gently, I pressed the locking tabs upward—I felt more secure that way.
If this is causing you stress right now, don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s best to proceed slowly and carefully, and if needed, slightly tilt the entire cabinet to make access easier.
I hope you manage it, and if you’d like, feel free to share how it went. Sometimes it helps to hear from the community that you’re not fighting alone over such a small piece of furniture.
