ADELGUNDE18 May 2015 10:23Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: Is there a simple way to retrofit the doors of my Ikea Besta system with a soft-close feature without completely rebuilding the doors or the cabinet?
I know that IKEA offers soft-close versions for some of their products, but unfortunately, my Besta doors don’t have this function. A full replacement or rebuild seems quite complex and expensive to me.
Therefore, I am looking for a practical solution that either works by attaching retrofit soft-close dampers or through another method that is as easy as possible to implement and does not permanently affect the appearance or functionality. Does anyone have experience with suitable products or good tips on how to achieve this? Thanks in advance!

Yes, there are retrofit hinges with soft-close that can be installed instead of the regular hinges.
- Remove the old hinges
- Install the soft-close hinges
This should be doable without much effort, as long as the hole spacing matches. Otherwise, you can stick soft-close dampers directly onto the hinge, but these are usually not very durable.

Yes, there are so-called retrofit hinges with soft-close function that can be installed instead of the regular hinges. At this point, I would recommend carefully checking which hinges are originally installed on your BESTA. Retrofitting soft-close only works if the M5 holes for the hinges are standardized.
- Alternatively, there are also soft-close dampers that can be attached on the side, basically as an add-on.
- Installation is usually straightforward, but when choosing the dampers, you should pay attention to their size and opening angle.
If you want a more discreet solution, I would suggest switching to compatible soft-close hinges. They are ultimately more durable and reliable than adhesive dampers.

I also tried retrofitting soft-close mechanisms myself. Unfortunately, the small additional dampers didn’t last long, and by now I have completely replaced the hinges, as Miguelke suggested.
It may be a bit more work, but it’s definitely a better investment if you want the cabinet to last longer. Maybe my experience can help you have the patience to avoid the quick fix, which often isn’t as sustainable.
