Hello everyone, I noticed that the hinges on my Ikea Metod kitchen fronts start to squeak over time, even though I installed them correctly. I’m interested to know if there is a simple, preferably long-lasting solution to stop the annoying squeaking on the Metod hinges without having to replace them completely. I have considered lubricants like silicone spray but would also like to know if that is effective in the long run or if it’s better to use special lubricants or other technical tricks. Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

The squeaking is usually caused by a lack of lubrication. Simply apply silicone spray or a drop of light oil to the hinge joints. Use only a small amount, as too much will attract dust. Then open and close the hinge several times.

This is indeed the most common reason. I would additionally recommend thoroughly cleaning the hinges first, removing dirt and old lubricant residues. Afterwards, it’s best to use a lubricant suitable for metal, ideally a Teflon spray or special sewing machine oil. WD-40 is popular but mainly removes rust rather than providing long-lasting lubrication.

Due to mechanical stress, the material can also shift slightly. In that case, it sometimes helps to slightly loosen the screws, adjust the hinge, and then tighten them again. This can also help avoid stress points that promote squeaking.

If the squeaking persists despite lubrication, defective plastic bushings in the hinge could also be a reason. These can be replaced individually without exchanging the entire hinge – Ikea offers such spare parts. However, I would recommend considering this only as a last resort.

That’s an important point. WD-40 is more of a penetrating oil than a permanent lubricant. It’s best to avoid using it on hinges, as it only stops squeaking temporarily. A long-lasting solution requires lubricants that adhere more effectively and do not evaporate.

It would be interesting to check how durable the plastic components in the hinge really are. Some inexpensive hinges suffer from material fatigue in the plastic parts, which causes the squeaking. In such cases, lubrication is only a symptomatic treatment.

So the question is: Does anyone have experience whether replacement bushings from Ikea completely fix the problem, or is it better to replace the hinge after a certain period?

Thanks for the tip, faso31. That exact question was on my mind as well. What matters to me is whether a small investment in replacement bushings can truly extend the lifespan of my already installed hinges. Is it common practice to fully replace the hinges after one to two years because maintenance isn’t worthwhile? How does the cost-benefit ratio look within the community for these Ikea Metod hinges?

I’m also curious if you have experience with different lubricants, for example, whether traditional sewing machine oils or thicker greases offer the advantage of keeping the hinges quiet over the long term.
