Hello everyone, I have a question that’s been on my mind regarding my current home project: Is there an assembly guide for the IKEA Besta system that, based on your experience, is noticeably better and easier to understand than the official one from IKEA?

The IKEA instructions are quite minimalistic, which generally keeps things clear, but with my Besta cabinet featuring multiple doors and inserts, I’ve encountered several steps that were hard to follow. In my opinion, the guide often lacks explanatory intermediate steps, details about screws and fastenings, or useful tips on how to avoid common beginner mistakes.

I’m interested to know if anyone here in the forum knows of alternative assembly guides that make the process clearer—whether through more images, better step-by-step explanations, or additional advice on handling the materials. The goal is a much smoother assembly with less frustration.

If you’ve ever used an unofficial or third-party revised manual or perhaps can recommend YouTube channels or written guides with helpful instructions, I would really appreciate any information!

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Your question is really interesting, pudoruk, because the quality of IKEA instructions varies significantly depending on the product.

My position is that there really isn’t a complete alternative that is better than the original, because IKEA focuses heavily on visual clarity and tries to remain wordless in order to be internationally understandable.

What you perceive as “minimalistic” is exactly their strategy. However, I agree that for more complex products, such as multi-part BESTA units, this simplicity can often lead to ambiguities.

What can sometimes help are forum posts or YouTube tutorials where users document their assembly experiences in detail—these often show alternative approaches or tips about screws that IKEA itself does not provide. The question is whether that counts for you as an alternative set of assembly instructions.

I also wonder if by the term “better” you mean clearer, more detailed, or less prone to errors. Because those are the key differences that would need to be evaluated.

Otherwise, it can also be useful to look at other furniture assembly guides that follow similar basic principles. Some members of the carpentry trade publish step-by-step guides that are not tailored directly to BESTA but offer complementary tips.

Without a specific source for a completely revised BESTA instruction manual, I find your expectation of a better version somewhat high, unless a DIY expert shares a privately prepared version.

To continue addressing pudoruk’s concerns:

I have assembled BESTA multiple times and can confirm that with more complex models, the IKEA instructions reach their limits—especially when it comes to fitting the hinges and the interior fittings.

There is no official or third-party guide that I consider clearly better in quality than the IKEA document. However, for such cases, I have created my own systematic assembly plan, which covers the following points:

- Pre-sorting all parts by screw size and function
- Labeling individual panels for better orientation (for example, with sticky notes)
- Detailed step-by-step descriptions of the work processes, especially for hinge installation
- General tips on how to align doors parallel and avoid misdrilling
- Advice on avoiding common pitfalls, e.g., how to still fit carcasses cleanly together when wooden parts are slightly warped

This approach has given me much more confidence during assembly than just having the IKEA instructions on hand.

Additionally, I recommend focusing primarily on fit accuracy: Many assembly problems arise from imprecise screws or slightly off drillings—no better manual can fix this, but careful handling and, if necessary, minor adjustments can help.

If desired, I can share this modified assembly plan here or explain certain details.

I assume pudoruk means all three aspects—a complete package that makes assembly safer and less frustrating.

Interesting discussion here. I think the whole debate about a "better" IKEA BESTA manual is somewhat overrated.

IKEA’s design relies exactly on the impression of being self-assembly and standardized size. You know: simple, minimal, and affordable.

Additionally, the manuals are intentionally designed to avoid overwhelming text, since they have to consider different languages, educational backgrounds, and experience levels.

If you want more detail, you need to bring a craftsman mindset yourself and rely on external sources and your own strategies, as Palenar has already suggested.

Especially with a product like BESTA, which is modular, a lot of individual customization is required — no manual in the world can cover all possible scenarios completely.

I would rather suggest not opposing IKEA manuals too uncritically but instead improving one’s own error management and better preparing for the assembly process, rather than searching for the "perfect" instruction.

What do you think? Isn’t the search for a supposedly better manual sometimes just an excuse to externalize assembly problems?
