Hello everyone,

I have recently been experiencing problems with the doors of my IKEA BILLY bookshelf, which noticeably stick and are therefore difficult to open or close. My question is: are there any alternative solutions or workarounds if the BILLY doors stick? I don’t mean the usual adjustments with a screwdriver, but rather alternative approaches, such as different hinges, modifications, or special tricks that go beyond the common recommendations.

I assembled the shelves myself and have checked the doors several times; they are not misaligned, but the sticking persists.

I would like to gather experiences with alternative solutions here – maybe someone has a clever idea that provides a lasting fix without me having to dismantle the entire shelf or buy expensive replacement parts.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello Felix35,

I think your question is very well formulated and important, as door binding with BILLY units is indeed a common issue and is often only temporarily fixed with simple adjustments.

First of all: the cause usually lies in the hinge design and minor irregularities in the wood edge or the shelf itself. The standard solution is often to realign the door, slightly loosen screws, and reposition the hinges, which you have apparently already done.

An alternative option beyond the usual is, for example, using so-called "soft-close hinges," which not only prevent slamming but also compensate for small binding points through their spring mechanism. You should, however, ensure that the hinges are compatible with the frame thickness of the BILLY doors.

If you do not want to replace the hinges: another trick is to use very thin felt or plastic pads on the contact surfaces to reduce friction. You need to measure precisely which thickness fits best; otherwise, the door will hang crooked again.

There is also the method of gently rounding or smoothing the inner edge of the door (the wood surface that contacts the shelf) with fine sandpaper. This is especially useful if scratches have formed over time that cause binding. But be careful: sand very gently to avoid affecting the overall appearance.

Finally, a question for you: have you checked whether the side panels of the unit are perfectly vertical? Small deviations during installation can also cause persistent binding, even if the doors themselves are mounted correctly.

That’s my initial overview. If you like, we can also take a closer look at your exact measurements or your specific setup. Often, it is small details that determine the success or failure of a solution.

Best regards!

Hello Felix35,

I’m familiar with the problem of sticking BILLY doors. I would recommend a systematic approach and checking a few things before considering more complex solutions.

First, make sure the screws on the hinges are neither too tight nor too loose, as either can cause the doors to stick. It’s also worth readjusting the top and bottom hinges slightly—sometimes a small adjustment in depth or height is enough to prevent sticking.

What you might have overlooked: the surface on which the shelf stands should be completely level. Even minor unevenness can slightly distort the entire shelf, which then affects the doors. A small shim or furniture pad under one corner can work wonders here.

If you are looking for alternatives, you might consider magnetic door catches or small door dampers. These don’t directly prevent sticking but help the doors close more smoothly and prevent them from being slammed shut—this can reduce sticking in everyday use.

Finally, my tip: try treating the edges where the door and cabinet meet lightly with silicone spray or special furniture sliders. These reduce friction long term.

If you want more details or step-by-step guidance, feel free to ask. I’m always happy to help! 🙂

That is indeed an interesting approach, but it tends to address the symptoms rather than the root cause. When a door truly sticks, there is usually another underlying issue that door dampers won’t fix.

You are also correct about not tightening the screws too much, as this prevents the hinges from being properly adjusted.

If you feel confident enough, you might consider switching to concealed hinges (e.g., 110° cabinet hinges), which offer a bit more adjustment flexibility. However, this is no longer original and can change the character of the shelving unit.

One more thing about shelf alignment: if your shelf is slightly warped, you could correct that by using small wedges made of plastic or wood at the back. I have done this several times myself, and it often eliminates sticking without having to alter the door mechanism itself.

How is your shelf currently positioned in the room? Is the floor perfectly level? I would start there first.

Additionally, I recommend lubricating the hinges with a drop of sewing machine oil—not just silicone spray, but a lightweight oil that penetrates the mechanism and ensures smooth operation over time.

I hope this helps you.
