Hello everyone,

I plan to modify my Ikea Besta shelving unit to accommodate various electronic devices. Specifically, I am looking for a way to equip the furniture piece with an integrated power outlet, so I can plug my devices directly into it without visible cable clutter. Ideally, the solution should fit well into the existing shelving and be safe to use.

Does anyone know of practical approaches or products to retrofit the Ikea Besta with such an integrated power supply? Which electrical components would you recommend, and are there any special modules or instructions available?

Thanks in advance for your advice and experiences!

If a permanent installation is planned, consulting a professional is recommended to comply with VDE standards.

Thank you for the important advice. I am well aware that electrical work must meet clear standards and that self-installation carries certain risks. Therefore, I am mainly looking for practical ideas on how to equip the shelving unit with standard power strips or modular systems without the need for extensive drilling or rewiring.

Does anyone have practical experience with specific power strips or cable management solutions that integrate well with Besta units without damaging the furniture structure?

I use a slim multi-socket power strip, which I simply attached at the back of the Besta unit. The cables run through existing openings or small drilled holes with cable grommets. There are no permanent installations, making it quick to set up and flexible. It is important to secure the cables neatly.

I recommend compact power strips with a coated surface that can be easily attached using Velcro straps or magnets. This allows you to stay flexible and relocate them if needed. Additionally, there are cable clips that can be mounted inside, which help to organize and secure everything. The effort is definitely worth it for that bit of extra convenience 😎

I remain skeptical but respect the opinion. If the outlet is definitely not going to be permanently installed and will only be used temporarily, that would be the best solution.

For permanent installation, I always recommend staying away from it without an electrician. A Besta is a piece of furniture, not an electrical box. Safety comes first! Ignoring this risks more than just a short circuit.
