Hello everyone, I have a question about customizing my Ikea Besta cabinets: Is there a way to add custom-made handles to the Besta doors? I don’t want to use any of the existing handle options from Ikea but rather something I craft myself that matches the style of my interior. The challenge I’m facing is how to create attachment points on the doors without damaging them or compromising their functionality. Are there any experiences or recommendations regarding materials, fastening methods, or preparations that could make this possible? I’m especially interested in solutions that are reversible and don’t leave any permanent marks.

It’s best to use threaded inserts in the door (such as metal screw-in nuts). These can be securely installed in the hollow core of the door and allow for stable external mounting of homemade handles. That sounds very interesting, thank you. Could you please provide more details on which types of threaded inserts are suitable for thin Besta doors? And how exactly are they installed without compromising the door’s structure?
For standard 16mm (5/8 inch) doors, mini metal inserts with external threads designed for screwing in are well suited. A precise hole is drilled (usually 6-8mm (1/4–5/16 inch)), and the threaded insert is screwed in using a tap or by hand. It is important to follow the exact measurements to ensure the insert fits properly and does not pull out. These inserts distribute the screw load better than a simple screw fastener.
