Is it possible to combine Ikea Besta furniture with acrylic or glass to enhance its appearance or expand its functionality? Specifically, I am interested in whether sturdy glass or acrylic fronts can be attached to BESTA cabinets or shelves without weakening the original structure or limiting the functionality of doors and drawers. Does anyone have practical experience or advice on mounting, material selection, or important factors to consider when adding plexiglass or real glass to BESTA units? Are there compatible accessories, DIY solutions, or modifications that are recommended?

BESTA elements are not designed for heavier glass fronts

That’s correct, and especially if you want to maintain the original function, you should be more careful with acrylic. In my experience, doors with glass were a bit firmer to open, which I noticed less with acrylic. So, for a balance between appearance and function, Plexiglas is actually recommended.

If you want clear visibility, acrylic sheets are better because they are lighter and more durable. Attach them to the frame using double-sided mounting tape or use self-adhesive clips. Glass is heavier and more difficult to secure without appropriate frames.

If you want an elegant solution, it’s best to install a wooden or aluminum frame for the glass. This way, you can securely fix the glass panel without putting stress on the furniture structure. Acrylic is also an option without a frame, but it must fit precisely.

My advice: Acrylic is best suited for shower enclosures because it is straightforward, lightweight, and shatter-resistant. Glass elements risk putting more strain on the hinges. If you want glass, definitely use a separate frame to distribute the load.
