Hello everyone,
I am currently considering assembling an Ikea Besta shelving unit but have a specific question that has been on my mind:
Is there a way to build the Ikea BESTA system completely without screws? I don’t just mean the standard screwing method included in the package, but rather an alternative construction approach that works entirely screw-free—perhaps using snap-fit joints, clamp systems, or special assembly techniques.
I ask because I would like to use the shelving unit as flexibly and tool-free as possible, while also keeping the appearance clean without visible screw heads. If anyone has experience with this, and can share whether it’s feasible, which components are needed, and the advantages or disadvantages involved, I would really appreciate a detailed response.
Thanks in advance!

Is there a way to assemble the Ikea BESTA system without using any screws at all?Hello Manoscar,
I understand your question well and would like to provide a thorough answer. Ikea BESTA furniture is designed for a stable assembly using screws. While some furniture series offer snap-fit systems or clamp fittings, BESTA mainly relies on connecting screws and dowels.
In theory, it is possible to reinforce individual parts with wooden dowels to reduce the number of screws, but assembling the unit completely screw-free will hardly provide a secure and lasting construction. Snap connectors are not available in the standard range, and custom modifications may lead to stability issues or require extra caution.
If you plan to disassemble and reassemble the unit frequently, screws combined with the appropriate removal tools are the best option—they offer the most robust and reliable connection.
In general, I recommend following the Ikea assembly instructions and using the screws, as this ensures the safety and durability of the unit.
Hope this helps!

Even though the screws can be annoying, they provide what matters most: safety and stability. Sometimes, a compromise between design and function is necessary, but I hope you find a solution that works for you!
