Hello everyone, I’m looking for a guide or proven tips on how to make IKEA Brimnes furniture overall quieter. Specifically, I’m concerned about the drawers and doors, which make quite a loud rattling noise when opening or closing. I suspect it might be due to the assembly or missing dampers, but I don’t want to take the furniture apart without a clear idea. Does anyone have experience with making BRIMNES furniture quieter without significantly altering the original parts? I’m especially interested in simple solutions focused on reducing noise when closing. Thanks for your help!

Hello ALVAFU,

I can gladly provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to noticeably reduce the noise from BRIMNES drawers and doors.

- First, check that all screws and fasteners are tightened properly. Noise often comes from loose parts.
- Next, I recommend cleaning and lightly lubricating the drawer slides (e.g., with silicone spray) to make them operate more quietly.
- For the drawers themselves, it helps to stick small felt or foam strips behind the drawer slides at the corners to act as dampers.
- For the doors, self-adhesive weatherstripping or soft door bumpers are ideal. You can attach these to the inside of the doors or on the furniture frame.
- Another tip: hinges can be retrofitted with special dampers (available as sets at IKEA or hardware stores) if they are not already installed.

If you like, I can send you recommendations for specific products later. It is also important not to use too much force when closing, as this reduces both noise and wear.

I hope this helps you for now!

The simplest measure is to install soft rubber bumpers on doors and drawers. This effectively reduces impact noise.

That would definitely be helpful. I’d like to add that careful adjustment of the hinges is often underestimated. Especially with BRIMNES, small quirks in the doors can easily cause noise. If the hinges are not precisely aligned, it can lead to additional rattling. It’s advisable to consult the assembly instructions to properly position and, if necessary, readjust them.

Also, checking that the drawers fit correctly in the runners is important, as already mentioned.

My detailed recommendation:

1. Check screws and assembly: This is often overlooked. The BRIMNES furniture material itself is usually quite sturdy, but it can rattle slightly from vibrations if the connections are loose.

2. Drawer slides – cleaning and lubrication: Remove the drawers and clean the rails of dust and lint. Use a silicone-based spray or special furniture glide lubricant. Avoid WD-40, as it dries out.

3. Install dampers: You can apply self-adhesive felt or foam rubber strips at the contact points of the drawers and on exposed furniture edges. I recommend felt, as it is durable and provides a secure hold.

4. Hinges: Many BRIMNES doors have simple hinges without dampers. There are retrofit damping hinge modules that can be attached to the screws to soften closing impact. Make sure to check compatibility carefully!

5. Alternative: Attach silicone bumpers beneath the door or on corners where they make light contact when closing.

6. Adjustment: Use a spirit level to check the alignment of doors and drawers. Unevenness causes them to bang or rattle.

Do you notice specific sounds? More metallic clattering or a dull “bang”? This helps to narrow down whether the issue is related to wood, metal, or plastic parts.

If you want, I can prepare a materials list with recommended suppliers.

Thanks for the detailed hints! The sounds are rather dull and sometimes almost like tapping on a hollow cavity, not metallic. Especially with the drawers, it often sounds like wood hitting wood or the back panel vibrating along.

I will try the idea with foam rubber or felt strips.

A materials list with sources would be great, so I can order everything specifically.

How exactly can I remove the drawer slides without damaging anything? Is there a recommended order or technique that has proven effective?
