ᐅ Is there a guide for using IKEA Brimnes furniture in small apartments?

DaploHello everyone,
I am currently exploring whether there is a kind of guide or at least some proven best practices for using the IKEA Brimnes furniture line, especially in small apartments.
My situation is as follows: I have about 30 square meters (320 square feet) of living space and want to arrange and combine furniture in a way that makes efficient use of storage while maintaining an open and airy feeling. Brimnes appeals to me because of its design and price, but some of the pieces seem quite bulky.
I am mainly interested in practical tips on how to best arrange or possibly combine the individual items (wardrobes, storage beds, dressers) to save space without making the apartment feel cramped or losing important storage.
Does anyone know of a "guide" – basically a recommendation on how to use Brimnes most effectively in small apartments? For example, combinations that work particularly well or assembly strategies?
Thanks in advance!

There is no official IKEA guide specifically focused on using Brimnes in small apartments.
However, a modular approach has proven effective. Brimnes offers various individual components that can be combined well.
- Use a bed with storage drawers to make optimal use of the space under the bed
- Place wardrobes flat against the wall, preferably oriented horizontally
- Use dressers as room dividers if the layout allows
It is recommended to plan carefully in advance, ideally using digital tools to precisely evaluate space utilization.

Interesting question, which largely depends on your individual living situation. When using Brimnes furniture in small apartments, you can derive a kind of "informal guide" by considering various aspects.
First, about the features:
- Brimnes beds with storage boxes are very practical when space is limited. The drawers provide storage for clothes, bedding, or other items. However, make sure the storage boxes are easily accessible, so position the bed to allow you to pull out the drawers without difficulty.
- The Brimnes wardrobes come in several widths and heights. A helpful tip: by combining individual pieces (for example, a narrow chest of drawers under a longer wall shelf), you can create storage without making the room feel cramped.
- Storage space behind doors or under windows is often unused. Brimnes furniture can usually be adapted well. If a piece fits exactly into a niche, it reduces wasted space.
Regarding the placement process:
- Measure the room carefully, including the clearance needed for movement (such as minimum distance in front of drawers).
- Plan a circulation area that is not too tight; otherwise, even with good furniture, the apartment may feel cramped.
- Combining low and tall furniture helps make the space feel more open. Place tall wardrobes along the wall, while lower pieces can help divide the space into zones.
Also: Have you thought about how to combine colors and lighting to enhance the feeling of spaciousness? Light colors on furniture and walls help make heavy pieces like Brimnes look visually lighter.
A question for you: What is your room layout like? Are there niches, windows, or other special features that should be considered?

One question for you: What is your room layout? Are there any recesses, windows, or other features to consider?Good question, thanks!
The room is roughly 5.5 m (18 feet) long and 5.4 m (18 feet) wide, basically square, with a large window on one side. Next to the door, there is a small recess about 0.6 m (2 feet) wide, 1.2 m (4 feet) high, and 0.5 m (1.5 feet) deep, which I would like to use for storage.
The floor is relatively dark, and the walls are white. There are no built-in shelves or other special features.
I think it makes sense to use the recess mainly for dressers or small cabinets. However, I wonder if Brimnes furniture really fits well there, since the depth of those pieces is sometimes quite large.
Does anyone have experience using the recess space with Brimnes? Or any tips on how to get the most storage out of such small “corners”?

Does anyone have experience with niche use in Brimnes? Or tips on how to make the most storage out of such small "corners"?Unfortunately, Brimnes is not very flexible for small niches; the furniture is usually too deep.
My advice: rather use shallow or narrow dressers from another series, then reserve the Brimnes storage for more open areas.
Alternatively, you can install shelves in the niche, which offer more options for variations.
The discussion is very interesting, especially because Brimnes as a furniture line offers a certain sturdiness, which can be both an advantage and a drawback in small apartments.
A few practical tips from my experience:
- Definitely use a bed with a storage box to efficiently gain storage space; this works particularly well in small bedrooms.
- The steel fittings on Brimnes pieces are sturdy, but the furniture cannot be very flexibly modified or downsized, so plan carefully before purchasing.
- For alcoves: I would recommend measuring and, if necessary, looking for standard dressers with a shallower depth. Brimnes wardrobes are often 50-60 cm (20-24 inches) deep, which is often too much for small niches.
- Another idea: place Brimnes dressers in open areas and equip the niche with space-saving shelving rails or wall shelves.
- Colors and accessories can reduce the “heavy” appearance of the furniture: light walls and rugs support this effect, especially in small spaces.
- Ultimately, there is no official guide for using Brimnes in small apartments, but with good measurements and planning, the line can be integrated quite well.
I wonder if you have also considered alternative furniture series that might be more flexible in terms of size adjustment?
