Hello everyone,

I am planning to modify my IKEA Pax wardrobe and wanted to ask if there is a detailed and reliable guide specifically for DIY modifications to the Pax system. I am especially looking for tips on cutting, adjusting the carcasses, or planning custom compartment layouts to ensure the whole structure remains stable.

I already have basic DIY experience but want to avoid major mistakes that could cause problems later on. Is there a best-practice guide for common Pax modifications, or perhaps some reliable user experiences that should be considered?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey, great idea to customize such a classic yourself! 😊

There isn’t an official IKEA guide for modifications, but many DIY enthusiasts in the community have shared their own step-by-step reports online. The most important points are:

- Mark chipboard panels accurately and cut them with the right saw (e.g., Japanese saw or fine-toothed saw)
- Don’t just replace the original screws and connectors, as the PAX mechanism could be damaged
- Pay attention to stability when cutting—avoid drilling too many holes

If you’re interested, I can share some of my experiences or tips on integrating acrylic strips or LED strips. Modifying is fun and lets you create something truly unique!

Regarding this: There is no official IKEA guide for modifications to the PAX system. Reliable instructions for a thoroughly tested DIY PAX conversion project are more likely to be found in forum posts and blogs by hobby craftsmen.

Recommendations:
- Use waterproof glues and high-quality screws for reinforcements
- Avoid freehand cuts without guide rails to prevent chipping of chipboard
- Work in modular steps, testing each change before final assembly
- Measure precisely: PAX has specific dimensions, and small measurement errors will cause fitting problems later

In general, a clean, methodical approach and careful choice of materials are the most important factors.

Converting PAX works well with a miter saw for precise cuts.

Only drill at the designated locations.

Reinforce the inner edges with wooden blocks or metal brackets when relocating doors or drawers.

Exactly! I completely redesigned my PAX and am really happy with the result!

My tip: Don’t be afraid of cutting or changing plans. Start small, for example with a single shelf, and then build up from there.

With the right tools (miter saw, dowels, screws), it’s nothing complicated. And the feeling when everything fits together perfectly is priceless!

If you want, I can share some tips on stabilizing or adding affordable extra materials. Just reach out, always happy to help!
