Hello everyone, I have just started planning with IKEA Besta shelving systems because we want to create a child-friendly storage solution for our apartment. I am wondering if there is a child-friendly version of IKEA Besta that is specifically designed to meet the needs of families with young children. My main concerns are that the furniture is safe, sturdy, and as flexible as possible to adapt to changing uses. Additionally, I am interested to know if there are child-appropriate designs, rounded edges, or suitable inserts to make the system as child-friendly as possible. I would appreciate any detailed information, experiences, or practical tips on how to make the Besta system more “child-friendly.”
I have to say, despite some criticism, I really like the Besta system – it’s very easy to assemble and modify, almost like building blocks for children. For child safety, I used a few simple tricks myself:
- We added soft edge protectors all around, which makes the whole setup safer against minor bumps and also less harsh on the eyes.
- I built a shelf compartment with boxes for Legos and similar items that can be quickly pulled out.
- We installed magnets on the doors that aren’t too strong, so the kids can barely open the doors on their own.
I even enjoy rearranging the furniture to create a sort of adventure area, without losing sight of safety. Flexibility meets creativity here – it makes life easier!

But:
- Install corner protectors
- Secure furniture to the wall to prevent tipping
- Use plastic instead of glass
This makes the shelving unit safer for children.
