We would like to keep our half-turn concrete staircase from the ground floor to the upper floor narrow to save space in other rooms.

Finished tread width: 94 cm (37 inches)
Tread run: 30 cm (12 inches)
Overall stair opening: 2.18 m (7 ft 2 in) wide, 2 m (6 ft 7 in) deep

At the moment, I only know the clear floor-to-ceiling height on the ground floor: 2.47 m (8 ft 1 in)

The architect suggests that the staircase size is only a makeshift solution and that he would make the stair construction wider.

In other respects, our architect tends to exaggerate (he is an older gentleman).

What do you think?

Honestly? Old school sometimes means experience. 94cm (37 inches) would be too narrow for me to be comfortable.

I have no idea if plaster still needs to be applied to your "finished" measurement. But adding a handrail on top of that, it really is just an emergency solution.

We have 95cm (37 inches), which is fine for everyday use, but I wouldn’t want any less than that. When carrying furniture (or large plants), it’s actually not really sufficient.

We have about 2.04 cm (0.8 inches) width, but it’s wood and not a concrete staircase. No idea if that makes a difference.
In everyday use it’s okay, as long as you don’t meet someone on the stairs. Moving furniture up or down is indeed a challenge.

P.S. Just measured again. From the wall to the handrail it’s 90 cm (35 inches).

Thank you for your opinions on this.

@Musketier Thanks for measuring!

That’s difficult.

You could possibly reduce the radius to about 15 cm (6 inches). However, the steps near the corners on the curves would likely become very narrow. Overall, though, a smaller radius might still be preferable, as it generally allows for wider steps.
