Good evening everyone,
I wanted to ask if the quote I received is reasonable. I have an old house where the electrical meter panel needs to be replaced. Currently, it still has screw fuses installed without an RCD (residual current device) or similar protection.
I have now received a quote for 4,700 euros for the replacement of the meter cabinet, which is prepared for photovoltaic and an electric vehicle charging station, including installation.
Is this price acceptable? I read online on a website that a meter cabinet costs between 500 and 700 euros (depending on the type, of course).
Do you think I can accept this offer?
Thanks and best regards

For your information: In an old house, an electrician usually encounters a variety of unique challenges. No one on this forum, and that’s for sure, can even remotely say whether the quote is justified, especially since you haven’t shared it publicly. The electrician is responsible for the entire system as soon as they make a significant change, which also includes the electrical inspection. In the worst case, they might spend days looking for flush-mounted boxes with wiring errors.
If anything, the electrician’s quote will only cover the expected scope of work. Of course, if they are not completely inexperienced, they will reserve the right to charge for any unexpected work beyond the original estimate. I also have a (very) old house and a few years ago had a large part of the electrical system replaced or renewed, including a new meter cabinet about four times the original size. After several companies looked at the meter cabinet and walked away without providing a quote, hands clasped to their faces, I eventually had to find a creative way to get the work done. About $6,000 and many dozens of labor hours later, roughly 70-80% of the electrical system was brought to an acceptable standard 🙄
As always, just my humble amateur opinion without any guarantee.

Wow, $6,000 for new supply lines and newly installed wiring is a good price. For me, it would only be the new panel and a one-time inspection. So, it seems a bit high to me. However, prices have certainly increased quite a bit.
Thanks to you all...
