Hello everyone,

We haven’t started building yet, but I would like to plan a leave of absence from my technical school because of the time commitment that building a house requires. When is the best time to apply for a leave? During construction or after completion?

The construction company will handle the building work up to and including painting and flooring.
I will have the exterior landscaping done as much as possible within my budget. It doesn’t all have to be completely finished at once; the most important things are drainage, driveway, terrace, and main entrance (move-in ready).
According to our plan, construction was supposed to start in April 2018, but it has been delayed. I expect the work to begin in May or June and to take no longer than 8 months.
(Leave of absence from the beginning of April to the end of September, or from the beginning of October to the end of March)

What has been your experience, and when do most people usually need time off?

Thank you very much
Reza

Zizzi, it’s not necessary to do that at all. The workweek has 5 weekdays, and if you visit the construction site two or three times, preferably when the workers are still there, for about 30 minutes, that’s enough. For selecting finishes and materials, you can take a day off, and that’s fine. Do you want to do a lot yourself? Paving? Painting? Flooring? Then take time off for those, otherwise I think it’s excessive to give up a whole semester because of the construction. Karsten

How do you train your technician? Full-time or alongside work in evening classes or on weekends?

If you are building a turnkey home, I would not recommend any interruptions. Everyone has commitments and does not pause their life.

Part-time continuing education.
I’m currently in my 4th semester. Up to the 3rd semester, we had classes on Saturdays. Now, until the end of the program, there are two 4-day seminars per semester plus preparation and follow-up work for the seminars. According to the schedule, we need to register for and take exams. Of course, we have to study and work through the materials provided at home. Optimal time management would be about 2 hours daily on average.
I also have:
8 to 9 hours of work daily
2 hours of commuting
Family, 1 child, shopping, etc.

Everything is possible! What else do you need to do during construction besides selecting finishes? Nothing, except occasionally sending emails. You will hardly ever hold the brick trowel.
