Hello everyone,

We are currently building and want to install a brine-to-water heat pump with deep drilling.
The BAFA old subsidy (end of 2020) was applied for and approved.

Now our drilling company contacted us regarding the application for the drilling and pointed out that a special insurance is required.
Although they think it’s nonsense, they warned that otherwise there could be issues with the BAFA subsidy.

They attached a flyer from h*** geothermic in cooperation with the German Heat Pump Association.
It states that the regular builder’s liability insurance is not sufficient because the BAFA conditions explicitly require a “no-fault” insurance to be taken out.

BAFA:
It must be proven to BAFA (at the latest when submitting the proof of use) that, at the time of drilling, no-fault insurance coverage against possible damages resulting from the geothermal probe drilling exists.

So we asked our liability insurance:
Blabla ... does the policy cover the BAFA-required conditions for damages caused by geothermal drilling?

Answer:
The contract covers damages during drilling related to the installation of a geothermal system.

Hmm. So the insurance says: That’s fine.
The special insurance provider says: No, damages can also occur years later, which liability insurance does not cover, and we definitely meet the BAFA requirements.

The latter point can be confirmed by third parties who have actually taken out this insurance and submitted it to BAFA as proof.

What experiences have you had? Have you taken out such insurance? – Apparently, there is only one provider for it 🙄

It was the same for us. The process was handled by the drilling company and was included in the drilling price.

The same applies to us. According to the insurance certificate, €1.35 per meter (approximately $1.45 per yard).

Ok, the opinions are clear.

Then I'll finalize one like that. Unfortunately, our drilling company does not offer a flat rate – although we would of course pay a higher price for it.

Thank you very much for your input!

Do they at least have the necessary certifications for BAFA?
