ᐅ Is Single Glazing Also Insulating?

Dear forum members,

We have purchased a listed (heritage-protected) house where two single-glazed outer window panes have broken. I want to replace them soon before it gets even colder. This brings me to my question: Are there any energy-efficient single glazing options – similar to those used in cars for some time now? If so, and if installation makes sense, where can I source such glass? Has anyone had experience with whether these can be cut to size by oneself?

Best regards,

Thomas

No. It doesn’t really work even in cars. The insulation comes from the gases in the spaces between the panes.

First, no, but what rebate depth would you need it for?
Second, no: in cars, it’s heat-reflective glass; it doesn’t insulate.

The insulation actually comes from the gap itself. Using gas other than regular air is only to prevent condensation.

Since single glazing does not provide insulation, box windows were commonly installed in earlier times.

Thank you for the responses. In fact, these are box windows, but even there, additional insulation would still be manageable.

The background with the car is that the S-Class in the 1990s (the armored W140 series) originally came with double glazing as standard, which was replaced by insulating single glazing in later models. This was probably more about heat protection than preventing heat loss.

The point about the groove is also valid since a thick pane wouldn’t fit anyway.
