What is the minimum equipment needed for garden irrigation?
At the moment, it is only important to me to have pop-up sprinklers that start watering when the tap is turned on. Later expansions should be possible.
The garden is about 700m2 (7,535 sq ft) in an approximate U-shape around the house, with taps located on both sides of the U.
The outer edges of the shape measure 26 meters (85 ft), 36 meters (118 ft), 40 meters (131 ft), and 26 meters (85 ft).
A well might be installed later as a water supply.

And every two years, you need new Gardena…
If consistent and durable irrigation is desired, people use Hunter, Rainbird, etc.

The rectangular sprinkler for standing use is now 20 years old and still works.

I will take a closer look at the rectangular pattern.

I am not really familiar with the topic yet and had naively thought just to spread 5 units over the lawn and that would be fine.

5 sprinklers spread out on the lawn, and that’s that.
Unfortunately, it’s not that simple, especially when you need to cover the area around the house as well.

For example, I have 7 sprinklers on three lines for just 200sqm (2150 sq ft) of lawn.

Are you planning to create flower beds around the lawn or install a hedge?
It is much easier to bury the irrigation lines before landscaping the garden than after it is finished. If you plan to expand significantly later, consider purchasing an irrigation controller with as many zones as possible. For sprinklers, I recommend Rain Bird impact sprinklers. Honestly, they look like cheap plastic, but they have excellent range and cover both close and distant areas evenly.

Our garden setup was a bit complex. We have four sprinklers connected to two irrigation lines (water tap with 5.5 bar pressure), plus two hedges—one in full sun and one in a shaded area—both watered via drip lines. There are also several pots on the patio irrigated by individual drip emitters, a vegetable bed with high water demand, and two long flower beds. In total, that makes eight irrigation zones.

The control system is set up as follows:
Everything is installed in the garage inside a tool cabinet, which I cut open at the bottom with an angle grinder. From there, eight lines run through the wall and branch out into the garden.

The faucet setup is always a bit more complex due to the low flow rate. We have more than 70 sprinklers and about 500 meters (approximately 1,640 feet) of drip tubing.
There are 20 zones. Control is via KNX. This morning, 14 m³ (approximately 3,698 gallons) of water passed through again.

Everything is big in this household. Simply big! I like that 🙂
