Hello,

we will be moving into a new apartment soon and would like your opinion on the walls. The pictures are attached. Are the walls in a condition that requires plastering, or can we apply wallpaper directly? What has been your experience?

Unrenovated kitchen: raw walls, partly tiled, window on the left, doorway on the right.

In our old house, we also had cast concrete walls.
Back then, the solution was to fill and sand them smooth.
Then, heavy glass fiber wallpaper was applied, followed by one or two coats of paint.
The wallpaper has lasted for 30 years and has been painted over several times.

Hello,
thank you for the reply. It sounds sturdy, but it is also too much work for us. It is a rented apartment, so I don’t want to invest too much. Would textured wallpaper be suitable to hide the unevenness, since it has a non-uniform pattern?

Yes,
filling large holes, rough sanding,
primer, woodchip wallpaper, and two coats of paint (otherwise the light spots will show through)

Are you a tenant or a landlord?

In the past, we applied waste paper wallpaper or what is also called lining paper on such walls. It becomes very smooth and can be painted or wallpapered. We did not sand the walls.
