Hello everyone,

I am currently considering the possibility of upgrading my Ikea Pax wardrobe with a wooden cladding myself. I am particularly interested in whether anyone in this forum has experience with attaching such wooden cladding independently, without compromising the stability or functionality of the system.

Specifically, I want to know if the smooth surfaces of the Pax units can be well covered with wooden panels or planks, which materials are best suited, and how to proceed in a simple and durable way to avoid problems like warping or poor fit later on.

Are there any established methods, important points to consider, or perhaps even a step-by-step guide?

I look forward to your tips, experiences, and opinions!

Wood cladding on the Pax can be done by yourself. Important: Use thin panels, seal the edges, pre-drill, and attach with screws or mounting tape. Avoid using materials that are too heavy.

A small tip: It’s better to use mounting tape and a few screws to secure the panels safely, but without damaging them so much that you can’t make adjustments later.

I agree with that – it keeps you flexible while still ensuring the cladding is stable. And hey, a little bit of wood immediately brightens up the room! 😉

Oh, and to fix minor unevenness, plastic shims or spacers work well! Just give it a try.

For doors: avoid using panels that are too heavy, as they may sag.

This is a particularly important point because the standard hinges on Pax are not designed to carry heavy additional loads. If you want to use heavy panels, I would recommend replacing the hinges with more robust models or adding extra reinforcements. Otherwise, premature hinge wear or even door warping may occur.
