ᐅ Is it possible to retrofit IKEA Metod cabinet doors with soft-close mechanisms?

GAIOGUHello everyone,
I am currently planning to retrofit soft-close functionality to my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet doors, as I really appreciate the smooth and quiet closing. My question is whether anyone here has experience upgrading the existing Metod doors or hinges with soft-close technology.
I am familiar with IKEA’s standard hinges without soft-close, but I would prefer not to replace all the hinges completely—are there screw-on attachments or similar solutions that can be installed afterward? If so, how difficult is the installation, and what should be considered, for example regarding door thickness or hinge design?
I would be very grateful for any advice on compatibility and installation tips!

If you want soft-close, the hinge must be completely replaced. The replacement is relatively simple, as they are just screwed in. For the Metod series, it is best to use the matching IKEA soft-close hinges.

Unfortunately, there are no universal soft-close retrofit kits that can be added to existing Metod hinges, because the soft-close system in IKEA hinges is integrated into the mechanism of the door itself. The spring and damping unit are permanently installed. This means you would need to replace the old hinges completely.
When replacing them, it is advisable to pay attention to the exact hinge dimensions – Metod usually uses 35 mm (1.38 inches) diameter drill holes for the hinges.
It is also important to check the screw lengths and the cabinet construction beforehand to ensure that the new hinges fit properly and can be securely fastened.
Depending on your experience, you can do the replacement yourself; it usually takes no longer than 10 to 15 minutes per door. For installation:
- Remove the door from the cabinet
- Unscrew the old hinge
- Screw in the soft-close hinge
- Rehang and adjust the door
If the doors are quite heavy or large, having a second person may be helpful.
Regarding door thickness or hinge design, you should choose the new IKEA soft-close hinges carefully, as they are optimized for the Metod system and will fit best. Other third-party hinges may require modifications.

There are certainly products that can be clamped or screwed onto the hinge arm.
However, Metod hinges are designed so that the closing mechanism is part of the hinge itself – which makes retrofitting more difficult. I think a test or thorough research would be worthwhile to see if anything specifically exists for Metod, since IKEA itself does not offer an explicit retrofit solution.
At the same time, it is worth considering whether retrofitting is really practical from a technical and economic standpoint – usually, it saves effort and is safer to simply buy the appropriate soft-close hinges.
What do you think, could there be a pragmatic DIY solution, or is a full replacement truly the best option in terms of cost and safety?
