Hello everyone, I am considering modifying the doors of my Ikea Brimnes wardrobe to better fit my room. Specifically, I want to know if it is possible to alter or completely rebuild the doors so that they open differently (e.g., sliding doors instead of hinged doors) or use different hardware and materials without compromising stability or functionality. Has anyone had experience with such modifications? What tools and materials would be necessary, and what important factors should be considered? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

The doors can be unscrewed and custom-made doors installed. For sliding doors, the Brimnes frame will not be sufficient, as it is not stable enough. Reinforcements are necessary.

I would only change the appearance and not the type of opening. Sliding doors require a lot of effort with the Brimnes. If you still want to try it, you should reinforce the carcass and work very precisely.

It is possible, but you should expect a significant amount of work. You would need to build new doors yourself and buy sliding door tracks to modify, as the Brimnes does not have a slot for them. This essentially means creating an almost entirely new piece of furniture.

So, you pay with time and materials. Is it worth it? I doubt it.

That’s probably true. If you have good DIY skills and can handle the challenges, you can certainly complete the renovation. For those looking for simpler solutions, I would rather recommend cosmetic updates (paint, handles) or finding a suitable replacement piece of furniture.

Basically: Brimnes is not a modular system suitable for changing door types. Warped doors or misaligned tracks are difficult to fix and stabilize afterward.
