Hello everyone,
I am currently considering whether and to what extent it is possible to modify furniture from Ikea’s Malm series after purchase. I am not only referring to minor adjustments like adding extra handles or changing the surface finish, but also structural changes such as shortening drawers, adding additional compartments, or adjusting the height. I have some experience with simple DIY furniture projects, but I am unsure if the materials and construction of Malm furniture can withstand such modifications without losing stability.
Has anyone had practical experience with this or knows the general limits when modifying Malm furniture? I would appreciate detailed advice or tips on what is possible and what to definitely be careful about!

Modifying Malm furniture is generally possible, but several technical aspects should be considered. The material mainly consists of particleboard with a laminate coating, which means that excessive mechanical alterations, especially shortening drawers or drilling into load-bearing components, can quickly compromise stability.
These modifications are usually quite demanding. Shortening drawers requires precise work to avoid damaging the drawer slides, and altering the basic structure of the dresser can reduce its load-bearing capacity. It is always advisable to have a plan beforehand and to use appropriate tools. On the other hand, the surfaces can be relatively easily refinished with sandpaper and suitable paint.

Small adjustments are fine; for structural changes, detailed planning and possibly reinforcements are necessary.
Hey sinay, I find your question really interesting because Malm furniture generally has such a clean, minimalist look – which makes it even more exciting to see how it can be softened up or adapted to specific needs. 🙂
That's exactly what I tried myself recently: I sanded down a Malm shelf and painted it with chalk paint. It worked really well and looked great.
Structural changes are, of course, a different matter. For example, if you want to add extra compartments, I would consider which materials to use to keep everything stable.
And be careful with the drawers! They can be tricky because the runners are precisely matched. But with some patience and the right tools, it will work, I promise! 😉

Hello sinay,
I am happy to provide you with an experienced assessment. Malm furniture, due to its construction and choice of materials (particleboard with laminate coating), is generally suitable for modifications, but with some limitations.
When making any alterations, you should be careful not to remove or significantly change load-bearing components, as this can greatly affect stability. The functionality of drawer slides is especially important in drawers and wardrobe units. If you plan to shorten drawers, I recommend measuring the drawer slides precisely and modifying them in a way that maintains their proper function.
Surfaces can be treated well, for example by sanding, painting, or applying adhesive coverings, to achieve visual changes. For additional compartments, you can attach wooden boards or shelves to the sides using alternative fastening methods that do not alter the main structure.
In summary: yes, modifications are possible, but they should be planned carefully, done cautiously, and with the right tools. If you have specific goals, I would be happy to provide more targeted advice.
