Benedikt_t23 Feb 2021 08:17I am considering whether it is possible to modify the doors of the Ikea Brimnes wardrobe to provide additional storage space. More specifically: Are there practical ways to equip the hinged doors with smart features like shelves, pockets, or drawers without compromising the structural integrity or design too much? I want to maximize the interior space, but I can’t find much information on whether the doors are sturdy enough or how to best attach mounting hardware for such a modification. Does anyone have experience with this or can offer advice on how to effectively increase storage on the doors?
Basically, the Brimnes door can be modified, but caution is advised because the doors are made from thin MDF and lack solid reinforcements. For additional storage, lightweight options like fabric organizers or slim hook rails are especially suitable. If you want to install shelves or drawers, I recommend the following:
- First, remove the door
- Mount profile rails or brackets so they distribute the load onto the door edge or frame
- Avoid point loads in the middle of the door, as this can cause warping
- Screws should not be too long to prevent splitting the material
- Alternatively, external reinforcements (metal plates, plywood) can be glued or screwed on to increase stability
What kind of storage solution are you thinking of exactly? What do you plan to use the doors for?

Benedikt_t23 Feb 2021 10:03Thanks for the information, Surela, that helps a lot. My main goal was to store plastering supplies and small household items inside the door, maybe also a few shallow shelves for small things like sponges or cloths. I definitely want to avoid anything heavy. I think fabric bags could be an option, but visually it would be nicer if it were something more stable and neatly symmetrical. Maybe shallow wooden shelves, but well secured and not wobbly. From your perspective, is that realistic if I add reinforcements? Or has anyone tried this before?

Avoid point loads in the middle of the door, as this can cause warping I find it interesting how often people simply assume that Ikea furniture can be modified in any way they want. Of course, the Brimnes doors are not designed to carry heavy loads – but those who rely on them often overestimate their own skills and the material. They think, “A small wooden shelf? No problem!” Until it ends up hanging on the door like a crooked box and everything becomes unstable. My recommendation is either to build entirely new doors designed for storage or to use the Ikea doors as they are without trying any modifications. Please don’t believe that a little reinforcement will work miracles.

I have enhanced my Brimnes doors with self-built shelves mounted inside – but kept the weight low and the design flat. It requires proper support and precise measurements. You should also keep in mind that reinforcements and built-ins can affect how the doors open and close. A good tip is to plan as accurately as possible beforehand and use lighter materials.
