Hello everyone, I have a question regarding the Ikea Brimnes furniture system, specifically the wardrobe and dressers from this series. Is it possible to retrofit the Ikea Brimnes wardrobe or dressers with caster wheels so that they can roll and be moved more easily? I mainly want to know if this is feasible in terms of stability and construction, since the furniture is originally designed without wheels and normally stands firmly on the floor. Are there any tried and tested conversion options or suitable wheels that can be attached without damaging the furniture or affecting its functionality? Thanks in advance for your assessments and experiences!

Interesting question! I find it somewhat questionable to add casters to a piece of furniture like the Brimnes, which is essentially static.

– that’s exactly the issue. These dressers are not designed to be moved, especially not on casters. This can quickly cause damage to the hinges or joints. I would generally advise against it, unless you want to constantly risk damaging your furniture. But hey, if that’s your preference, you’ll surely look for solutions. Maybe a type of caster mat or a slider would be sufficient instead of actual screw-in casters?

From a technical perspective, there are several points to consider when equipping the Ikea Brimnes with casters: - The back panel is usually thin and primarily serves to stabilize the unit; it is not load-bearing enough to support casters mounted at the bottom. - Casters should be highly durable and ideally attached with a bracket that ensures stability. - The Brimnes cabinet has feet or a base that does not include pre-made mounting options for casters. Therefore, casters would likely need to be screwed directly to the bottom panel, which could compromise structural integrity. - Furniture casters with mounting plates might help to distribute pressure points. Overall, I recommend installing a sturdy subframe before mounting casters. Alternatively, casters should only be installed on dressers that experience less load.

Hello, I have completed a similar project myself and can offer some practical tips: I mounted the casters on an additional wooden board, which I securely screwed under the cabinet. This way, I avoided damaging the original feet or base panels directly. However, it is important to choose casters that can be locked to prevent the furniture from moving unintentionally. Also, make sure the cabinet is not loaded too heavily, as lateral forces from the casters can affect stability. Additionally, check that the drawers still open smoothly. It works well if done carefully, but frequent movement should not be expected, rather occasional repositioning.

Yes, it works. Did it myself, screwed casters with a fixed mounting plate underneath, holds well. Important: use casters with a lock and avoid cheap ones.

I completely understand your concern, as sometimes flexibility with furniture is needed, especially with Brimnes, when the space is used differently often. However, you should be careful that the wheels do not pose a risk to children or pets if the furniture suddenly rolls away. Additionally, the load on the wheels can be uneven if they are not installed exactly right, which can cause the furniture to tip over. I helped a friend install wheels on Brimnes furniture, and we have had mostly positive experiences when moving it carefully. A rolling system on the dresser only, and not on the tall and heavy wardrobe, seems to work better.
