ᐅ Is it possible to cut and modify the shelves of the IKEA Brimnes unit?

gedorenHello everyone,
I have a specific question regarding the shelves of the IKEA Brimnes shelving unit: Is it possible to sand or even cut the wooden shelves yourself to adapt them to unusual room dimensions or personal preferences?
I ask because my apartment has some non-standard measurements, and I’m considering whether I could shorten the shelves without compromising their stability or appearance. Has anyone tried this before? If so, which tools and methods would you recommend?
I appreciate any tips related to the material, surface coating, or potential issues during modification.

Hello gedoren,
your question is very understandable, as flexibility is often necessary. The shelves from the IKEA Brimnes series are usually made of particleboard with a foil coating, which makes cutting somewhat more challenging.
In general, the shelves can be cut down using a fine-toothed saw (e.g., circular saw or jigsaw with a blade suitable for wood-based panels). It is important to apply protective tape or painter’s tape to the cutting edge to prevent chipping of the foil.
After cutting, you should smooth the cut edge with fine sandpaper. With foil coatings, the cut edge will naturally be visible, but this often matters less if the edge is not highly exposed.
Regarding stability: shortening the shelves a little is usually not a problem, as long as you do not compromise the shelf’s overall stability by removing support surfaces or load-bearing parts.
If you only plan to make minor adjustments to the shelves, this generally works well. However, for more extensive modifications, you should consider installing support strips or similar reinforcements.
I hope this helps you!

After cutting, you should smooth the cut edge with fine sandpaper. That is correct. However, I would add that the film coating often is not very durable on freshly cut edges.
If you want a visually uniform edge, replacing the shelf boards with high-quality cut-to-size panels or custom shelves might be a better option.
The statement that stability is hardly affected only applies to minimal trimming. Once the cut is made within the bearing surfaces of the shelf, you can expect problems.
For me, the question is also whether the shelf will remain safe and load-bearing after shortening the shelves. Do you plan to cut the boards while they are installed or remove them from the shelf before cutting?
I would also be interested to know if you intend to cover the edges with edge banding or another material to prevent peeling.

How? Ideally with a jigsaw or circular saw and painter’s tape to protect the surface. Thanks for the clear answer! That sounds practical.

My question is also whether the shelf will remain safe and stable if the shelves are shortened. Do you plan to cut the shelves while they are still in the unit or remove them first?I planned to take the shelves out of the unit first and then cut them. Load capacity is important to me because I intend to place books and devices on it.
I hadn’t thought specifically about edge banding or similar yet – that would definitely help reduce chipping. Perhaps plastic or wood strips could be used? If anyone has experience with materials that adhere well and stay durable, I’d appreciate it.
Could someone also share the thickness of the Brimnes shelves? I’d like to know that to choose the right trim.
