ᐅ Is it normal for Malm drawers to stick or catch when opening?

domokauHello everyone,
I’ve noticed that the drawers on my Ikea Malm dresser often stick or feel a bit stiff when opening. I’m wondering if this is normal for this series or if it could indicate a defect or an assembly issue.
The drawers aren’t completely difficult to open; they tend to stick occasionally, mostly in the first few centimeters (inches) when pulled out. The dresser is set up fairly straight and stable.
Does anyone have experience with Malm drawers? Is it normal for them to stick sometimes, or should I try to adjust something or consider a warranty claim?
Thanks for your insights!

Basically, Malm drawers are not supposed to stick. The design with metal slides should ensure smooth and even opening.
Drawers that stick often indicate installation inaccuracies, such as incorrectly mounted rails or screws that are too tight. It can also be that the drawer is not perfectly aligned within the frame.
Recommendation: First, check the screws on the drawer slides and whether the drawer sits straight in the tracks. If possible, briefly remove the drawer, inspect it, and if necessary, reinstall it. If the issues persist, a replacement or repair under warranty might be appropriate.

Hello domokau,
I can explain the topic in more detail because problems like this occur more frequently with Ikea Malm drawers when the assembly is not done perfectly.
1. Assembly and alignment: The metal runners on the sides must be installed completely parallel. Even a slight tilt will cause the drawer to stick when opening.
2. Screws: It is important to tighten the screws of the slides with the appropriate torque. Too tight or too loose will also negatively affect the drawer movement.
3. Drawer boxes: Are they straight and not warped? A warped box can cause rubbing on the sides.
A simple solution: Completely remove the drawer, loosen all screws on the slides, realign the runners, retighten the screws. Then reinsert the drawer and test it.
That is a very accurate point I can only confirm.
In rare cases, the sliding rails may lack lubrication. You can carefully apply liquid wax or silicone spray (sparingly!) to the metal gliders.
I hope this helps!

Malm drawers that stick are really not uncommon! 🙂
Sometimes, a little help is enough: gently remove the drawer and clean the runners with a soft cloth, maybe apply a little silicone spray – but not too much, or it will become oily and attract dust.
And of course, be careful during assembly to make sure everything fits properly. These things sometimes need more care than you’d expect 😉 Good luck!

Hello domokau,
Regarding your question about whether it is normal for Malm drawers to stick when opening: No, this should not happen if everything is properly assembled and in good condition.
However, "normal" here also means that in practice, small irregularities or assembly errors often occur, which can be easily fixed.
I recommend carefully removing the drawer completely and checking the rails and rollers for dirt or wear. Dust or wood chips can sometimes cause sticking.
If the problem cannot be resolved, it is worth contacting Ikea customer service, especially if the furniture is still under warranty.
One more tip: Avoid heavily loading Malm drawers, as they tend to stick more often if the weight is unevenly distributed.
