ᐅ Is it true that you are no longer allowed to open the windows when using a ventilation system?

We are planning a new build with standard insulation, without any KfW standards since we do not need any loans.

Now we are quite uncertain:
One HVAC installer says that a ventilation system is absolutely necessary; otherwise, we will get mold. After all, no one ventilates by fully opening windows five times a day, and we won’t either. Also, leaving the bathroom window on tilt for 10 minutes after showering does not help.

Another installer says that a ventilation system is unnecessary because we are not building according to KfW standards. According to him, then we should never open windows again, as the ventilation system will immediately shut down and get confused. So, never sleep with the window open, never smell freshly cut grass, or hear the birds singing? That simply can’t be right.

What should we do? Who is correct?

A ventilation system is a comfort feature.
Very few people open their windows for a few minutes several times a day, especially during the cold season. It cools down the whole house.

With a ventilation system, you are free and able to open the windows at any time without any problem; you often just lack the reasons to do so.

Since terrace doors are installed in the kitchen, living room, and bedroom, people tend to open them for a few minutes more often – at least that’s what I think. We currently live in a house without terrace doors, and all the window sills are fully occupied. That’s why we only ever open the windows slightly on the tilt position.

No, people don’t do that because they don’t have the time. Opening bedroom windows for ventilation on Saturday mornings isn’t enough.

Besides, you don’t build according to energy saving regulations because you need a loan; rather, you get the loan because you build according to stricter energy saving standards. Many also do this out of conviction or to save energy.
For the same reason, windows remain closed in winter to avoid losing heat.

Friends of ours built a standard house, and after the blower door test, it basically qualified as a passive house – and that without a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery.

Now they just have to make sure the place doesn’t develop mold.

That is absolutely correct. That is why modern houses are now only fitted with fixed windows and patio doors without handles or opening options. This has the major advantage of significantly reducing costs.

Apart from the fact that it makes no sense at all to not be allowed to open the windows, I have only noticed that the fan tends to run at a higher speed when one or two windows are slightly open on tilt.

Yes, because then the pressure conditions change and the systems try to compensate for that.
