ᐅ Is it allowed to place privacy screens anywhere on your own property?

Hello everyone,

I have the following situation: Last year, around the time we moved, we talked with our neighbors and agreed to plant a hedge along the property boundary for enclosure. In principle, I still have no objection to that; the hedge can definitely be planted right on the boundary.

However, a few days ago, the neighbors installed a shed along the boundary. It is quite a large structure made of silver corrugated metal. There is nothing wrong with that, of course, but it’s not exactly the view we want to have while having breakfast on our terrace.

I would now like to build a wooden privacy fence on our side of the property, something with a trellis for climbing plants, and plant greenery in front of it so that when looking toward that corner, we see a nice garden instead of the metal.

Am I allowed to do this without any issues? Are there any minimum distances I have to keep? I’ve attached a sketch where I have marked the metal shed in gray and the desired privacy fence in yellow. Of course, I wouldn’t do this without discussing it again with the neighbors first, but I would like to know where I stand legally. I haven’t been able to find much information online, only about enclosures with fences.

What bothers me more is the agreement we made about the hedge not being kept.
I would then plant greenery on our side, and the neighbor can do and place whatever they want on their side. 🙂
Be glad you’re not planting a hedge. Maintenance should not be underestimated.

We had another chat with the neighbors in the meantime. They are really nice people, and we get along well.
It turns out the shed isn’t really to their taste either; it was just the result of a storm-related accident and is basically a temporary solution for an indefinite period.
They had no problem with my idea of setting up a privacy screen there—in fact, they even offered to help us install the panels. 🙂

We agreed that we would plant the hedge on the rest of the property outside the line of sight of this shed. I said that would be fine with us. However, I now have the following problem: these neighbors are quite noisy. :/
Nothing illegal, but in the afternoons they like to turn up bass-heavy music in their garden, which carries outside, and unfortunately it’s annoyingly loud in our living room even with the shutters closed. I’m sensitive to that kind of noise. My husband can ignore it; I can’t block it out—it’s not the neighbors’ fault, it’s just my personal sensitivity to noise.

Now I’m thinking about what we could do instead.
It concerns the entire area marked in yellow, including the one meter (3 feet) behind the carport where our trash bins are located. We need some kind of sound barrier there, ideally as tall as possible. How can this be done elegantly? What absorbs the most sound?
What came to mind was a brick wall, or wooden fence panels covered with climbing plants. Or something completely different?
