I need to securely glue the side and back panels of a cabinet together.

Normally, wood glue is recommended for this.

Can construction adhesive be used as an alternative? Will it hold wood to wood?

Or is construction adhesive only suitable for plastic, plaster, and steel?

So on mine, it is intended for absorbent substrates, such as wood, plaster, concrete, etc. Steel and plastics are not suitable because they are non-absorbent. Plastics need to be dissolved by the adhesive, which requires different types of adhesives depending on the plastic.

Baseboards made of MDF stick very well with this, and I will probably never be able to remove them...

I wouldn’t use assembly adhesive for this. It’s not designed for that purpose. It also remains flexible, like silicone or acrylic, so it doesn’t really harden.

The best option here is PU wood glue. One- or two-component doesn’t matter. It dries quickly and provides a really strong bond. I only work with PU glue now. The bonding and adhesion are incredible. I rely on the product from Würth, but others work fine as well.

I guess it depends on the mounting adhesive. We have the one from Pattex here, and I wouldn’t expect any issues with gluing wood to wood using it. We have even used it to glue baseboards before, and it holds extremely well.

In what world does construction adhesive remain flexible? Once it’s cured, you can only remove it with a hammer and chisel. That’s exactly why construction adhesive is used and acrylic or silicone is not used...

If the packaging says it can bond wood, then it can bond wood. It’s as simple as that.

The specific properties of the assembly adhesive are completely irrelevant here. For bonding wooden furniture, wood glue is used. On a deserted island without wood glue, you might try using any available assembly adhesive as an emergency solution. But I do not see such an emergency situation here.
