Hello everyone,

We are having a new roof window installed in an older building from 1987. It faces south. The room will be used as an office. Is it necessary to install an external roller shutter? Or is an internal pleated blind sufficient?

We would like to save the costs of the roller shutter. However, we are concerned that it might get too hot in the summer without it.

Roller shutter. Definitely, otherwise it will only get hotter.

If you install something on the inside, the heat stays inside the room. It’s still better than nothing. However, if you are already replacing the window, it’s best to install an external roller shutter at the same time.

From experience, having lived for years in an older building under the roof, I recommend exterior roller shutters. Save money elsewhere instead. ;-)

Does it really make that much of a difference? I can’t quite imagine it. And then in summer, I would be sitting and working in the dark?

Definitely go for roller shutters. We have a heat protection blind from Velux on a roof window. It does help (it’s on the outside), but nowhere near as much as a roller shutter. I wouldn’t cut costs here. Without the roller shutters, we wouldn’t be able to sleep at all in the attic during summer because it gets too hot.
