ᐅ Is an additional heater recommended in a bathroom with underfloor heating?

Hello everyone,

We are currently planning our new house and have reached the point where we need to decide on an additional fast heating option for our bathroom, one that responds more quickly than the rather slow underfloor heating.

We are considering either a wall-mounted fan heater or an electric towel warmer. We understand that both options have their advantages and disadvantages, but this supplementary heater will only be used during transitional seasons when the underfloor heating is not yet running or has already been turned off.

The bathroom has a floor area of about 18 square meters (living area around 16 square meters (172 square feet) due to the sloping ceiling). The built-in heating system will be an air-to-water heat pump with a controlled ventilation system.

Personally, I’m leaning toward the towel warmer, mostly for aesthetic reasons.

What would you recommend?

Best regards,
Dirk

A towel radiator should not be used to heat the bathroom but rather to warm the towels. Whether they can be considered a luxury or if these devices are truly effective is debatable.
In our old house, we had one but eventually stopped using it because it didn’t make a difference. Additionally, it cannot dry or warm several towels at once if they are stacked, as they don’t have direct contact with the pipes. Dust also plays a role if you don’t have regular cleaning.

We will install electric towel warmers, in addition to underfloor heating, a wall heating system, and I will also run two additional lines for infrared panels – that should be enough.

Hmm... So, are you all basically saying it’s rather pointless? Since the towels don’t really get properly warmed and the towel radiator also isn’t effective as an additional heater for the bathroom??

1500 EUR for a towel radiator??? Do you have a luxury designer model? The “standard ones” cost around 160 - 200 Euros.

In my opinion: if the room heating load calculation shows that it’s no longer needed, then it’s unnecessary (or just a matter of personal preference). If the calculation indicates that it is needed to achieve a comfortable temperature of 25°C (77°F) — which is often the case — I would rather choose something like a mirror infrared heater... or, if preferred, simply connect the towel radiator to the heating system. The fact that these only become lukewarm is, in my view, usually due to a low supply temperature...

A towel warmer is not an additional heating source!

And speaking as a homemaker: never again, they collect a lot of dust, and cleaning them takes a lot of time.

Have your underfloor heating pipes installed closer together if you have concerns.

Personally, I’m very sensitive to cold, and in our bathroom of about 11.5m² (124ft²), roughly 7.5m² (81ft²) are covered with pipes: it gets properly warm!

A tight installation doesn’t make much difference with the small area and the required temperatures for a low-temperature heating system – you, Yvonne, probably have gas, right?
